Mr. Yaakov Elchanan, may he live.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 5th of Teves, in which you express surprise that at the farbrengen on the day of good tidings and redemption, Yud Tes Kislev, in Kfar Chabad, there was no public mention regarding our Jewish brethren there etc., when it would seem that prayers should have been offered for them at that gathering etc. Your astonishment grows since you are certain that many present have relatives there etc.

Your first question is answered by your second: precisely because this matter is so deeply connected to the souls of the leaders of the gathering and the people of Kfar Chabad in general—who have engraved within their innermost being all they experienced before leaving there, and especially since nearly all of them have very close relatives there both physically and spiritually—when considering human nature it is impossible for them to fulfill their obligation in this matter with a brief prayer or reciting a chapter of Tehillim or similar, and then immediately continue with the joy of the farbrengen etc. For in many types of situations—and especially in this one—a person cannot control his spirit even if he musters all his strength due to the festive nature of the day, its joyous content, and respect for those gathered. It is clear and simple that such a deep and internal matter has no place for publicity. In the days before and after the festival—and even during it but not at the farbrengen—certainly not only do people remember those individuals and their situation there, but they stand alive before their eyes; similarly for most of Anash who left from there—the connection remains strong and even grows; letters from Anash about them arouse concern for their welfare; these letters are written with special vitality.

On another note but related: it has been explained in many places that all Bnei Yisrael are like one person—a single complete body. Thus, just as in a physical body, strengthening one limb automatically increases strength and vitality throughout all limbs; so too here—and even more so—for in spiritual matters space does not separate and natural physical laws are broken. Therefore, as each individual here increases his efforts in matters that bring redemption to this small world—the person—he increases light and goodness and pushes away negativity; this also increases goodness there—not less than sending a package or similar, but even more so. As you wrote about your family background—I hope no proof is needed—that only Torah and its mitzvos can increase light and goodness in our physical world; as distress unfortunately grows so must we increase these efforts ever more. Since it is necessary, surely full ability has been given to fulfill this urgent demand; its lesson is certainly understood.

On this occasion—and since everything is by Divine Providence—I especially wish to arouse you regarding the absolute necessity and personal obligation to set fixed times also for studying Pnimiyus HaTorah which in our generation has been revealed through Toras HaChassidus. Especially now as we are in the two-hundredth year since the passing (yahrzeit) of the Baal Shem Tov z"l—a year auspicious for spreading his wellsprings (i.e., Chassidus) outward as stated in his well-known holy letter.

Blessings for good news regarding all mentioned above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that deep personal pain over fellow Jews' suffering often precludes public expression at joyous gatherings. Instead, increasing Torah study—especially Chassidus—and mitzvah observance brings true spiritual support to those in need everywhere.
