Shalom u'Vrachah!

After a long break, I received your letter from the 17th of Teves.

Regarding what you write about cooperating with Tzeirei Aguch and your care not to pressure them, it is understood that generally, when one does not pressure someone, they act with more enthusiasm—as our Sages say: "A person prefers one measure of his own over nine measures of his friend's." However, on the other hand, this applies only to the manner of influencing them; but the influence itself is necessary, for in general it is said: "Salvation comes through many counselors." All the more so regarding relationships between youth and elders, as is known from our Sages' teachings on this. There are many ways—even pleasant ones—to bring influence and guidance so that the recipient feels he arrived at the point on his own initiative.

Regarding what you write about exchanging letters with your student, it is clear this alone is not sufficient. Certainly you will strive to find a way of writing that will prompt your student to respond to you. The very knowledge that one must reply brings increased effort so that the situation will bring satisfaction to the one being informed. It would be good if among your friends here there are those who can connect with him face-to-face—of course diplomatically—so he does not know that the request or encouragement came from you. And even if this effort by your friends is not so great or not in deeper matters, still this too will help—due to the advantage of proximity.

Blessings for good news in all mentioned above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that while we should avoid pressuring others, it remains vital to positively influence them using thoughtful and diplomatic means. Direct connection or even indirect support can inspire growth and positive outcomes.
