Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from 1/21.

a) Regarding what you wrote about your sister (may she live) and the family relationships in her home: In such cases it is evident that the words of friends and acquaintances have more effect than those of close relatives. Therefore, you should ask friends and acquaintances to speak about this—in a way that it will not be known that the request came from you. It is also understood that your sister should not take offense even regarding matters in which she believes she is one hundred percent correct; for peace is great—especially peace at home—so it is worthwhile to overlook one's own feelings and restrain oneself just to maintain peace. It goes without saying that she should increase her observance of the laws of family purity (niddah, hefsek taharah, immersion in a kosher mikveh, etc.), because closeness not according to halachah brings about distance. I hope you will find the right words to explain this to your sister (may she live).

b) Regarding what you wrote about forgetfulness: Among the recommended suggestions is to change one's study topic from time to time—that is, not to study one subject or in one style for hours on end; rather, after studying for an hour or half an hour, switch to another topic or a different style of learning (such as alternating between breadth and depth), etc. Another suggestion is to write down the content or main points of what is being learned. And since everything requires help from Heaven: let your mother (may she live) and your sister observe the custom of Jewish women to give charity before lighting candles every Friday afternoon and before Yom Tov; they should also check their mezuzos at home to ensure all are kosher according to halachah, as well as the husband's tefillin (may he live). You (the writer) should give some coins to charity every weekday before morning prayers.

With blessings for good news in all the above,

In the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
