The Rebbe acknowledges the Torah scroll dedication scheduled for Tu Bishvat, connecting it to the stages of spiritual growth in a person. He explains how each stage parallels aspects of creation, culminating in the highest level of intellectual and spiritual service.

Havavac"h sha'i"a nu"n involved in tzt"z Shneor Zalman Yitzchaki

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter from 2 Teves, in which you write that you have set the date for bringing the Torah scroll into the synagogue for the fifteenth of Shevat, Rosh Hashanah for trees. In a separate envelope I am sending you a booklet containing a letter from my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal lehavdil ben chayim lechayim zichrono yagen aleinu, regarding the dedication of a Torah scroll, which will surely arrive in time.

Since our Sages say that merit is brought about on an auspicious day, and as the Baal Shem Tov taught that from every matter and event we must learn a lesson in serving G‑d—that is, in fulfilling one's purpose of creation, which as stated in the Mishnah (end of Kiddushin) is to serve one's Creator—there is also an allusion here. This fits with our Sages' saying that man is called a "small world," and everything that exists in the world exists within man. In particular this includes the four categories: mineral (domem), vegetable (tzomeach), animal (chai), and human (medaber). In serving one's Creator as well there are these four types, progressing from strength to strength. The beginning is similar to mineral—meaning one only receives without adding anything from oneself; generally these are days of smallness and childhood. From mineral one rises to vegetable—where one grain produces many grains and seeds—vegetation like a tree bearing fruit; meaning that what one receives and learns is processed deeply and used for personal development as much as possible.

From this type one rises over time and through effort—both spiritual and physical—to animal; meaning he overcomes his own nature if it is undesirable, as well as his environment or inherited tendencies, changing his place and not being bound by his surroundings. But even this is not the ultimate goal; one must rise higher to human—the speaker—a person with intellectual depth, not just practical intellect found even among animals (like a clever fox). That means even in serving his Creator he does not suffice with only learning what is necessary for knowing what to do or avoid; rather he also engages in knowledge of his Creator—as it says: "Know the G‑d of your father," whose essence is the inner dimension of Torah revealed and explained in Chassidus in our generation.

From all this it is understood that man's first action is rising from mineral—mere recipient—to vegetable; this beginning occurs on Rosh Hashanah for trees, as it says: "For man is like a tree of the field." From there comes Rosh Hashanah for animals and Rosh Hashanah for humans (see Mishnah Rosh Hashanah ch.1). The central point and final goal is: "Say before Me verses of kingship so you will crown Me over you," as our Sages say in Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer ch.1.

With blessing.

Summary

The Rebbe connects dedicating a Torah scroll on Tu Bishvat with personal spiritual growth: just as trees grow and bear fruit, so too must we progress through stages—from passive recipient to active contributor—culminating in conscious service of G‑d through deep understanding.
