Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter from the 4th of Iyar in due course, and as you requested, I mentioned you and your wife when I was at the Ohel of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, for what you need.

Regarding your complaint about your spiritual state and your feeling that any positive movement is only momentary, it is well known what my father-in-law the Rebbe said: one must not speak lashon hara about a Jew—and also not about oneself. It is also known from Chassidic discourses on the verse 'Hayinu k'cholmim' (see Torah Or at the beginning of Vayeshev and elsewhere) that even if after a positive shift one finds oneself in an opposite state G‑d forbid, nevertheless it is possible that at the moment of change it was genuine—just as in a dream two opposites can coexist.

In any case, even if things are as you describe, complaining is not a solution; rather, action is needed—starting with the most "simple" things such as keeping the three daily study portions instituted by my father-in-law in Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya (which you surely know), concluding with spreading the wellsprings—that is, influencing your surroundings to become truly chassidic. All these are tried and tested methods so that prayers from the depths of the heart will be accepted; may Hashem help you to become truly different. When one follows this clear path and engages in these matters—with full intent—it is close to everyone; indeed it is very close as explained in Tanya. Then Hashem grants success so that ultimately one changes—even from one essence to another. May Hashem grant you success to share good news that you have influenced your environment to become chassidic; this will also serve as proof that you yourself are ascending in goodness.

Blessings for receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that negative self-talk is unhelpful; instead, consistent action in Torah study and positive influence on one's environment lead to real spiritual change. Sincere effort brings G‑d's help for true transformation.
