Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 12th of Cheshvan, in which you write about ... who is in Eretz HaKodesh (the Holy Land), and he is having difficulty with a shidduch (match), and you think that if he were to trim his beard it would be easier for him to find a match—especially since you see that many frum (observant) Jews do so:
It is unnecessary to elaborate on this point: all Jews without exception—men and women—are believers, children of believers; they believe and know that the blessed Creator runs the great world as well as the small world of each individual person with Divine Providence. And so that people should know how to conduct themselves, the blessed Creator gave them the holy Torah, which shows the way of what one may do and what one may not do throughout one's entire life.
And among all these mitzvos is also the mitzvah of wearing a beard (there are even those who hold that one may trim the beard—but even they know that wearing a beard is a mitzvah; however, there are those who hold that it is forbidden to trim the beard at all—such as the tzt"z [Tzemach Tzedek], a grandson of the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, who rules according to halachah that according to Torah it is forbidden to trim the beard). In any case, it is clear that wearing a beard and not trimming it is a mitzvah, and this shows that it is an expression of yirat shamayim (fear of Heaven).
Therefore it is understandable: since everything depends on the Master of the World—and especially in matters of shidduchim (matches), where more than in other matters it is evident that the blessed Creator is entirely in charge—and He has commanded that wearing a beard and not trimming it is a mitzvah, everyone clearly understands correctly that it cannot be that a beard would be an obstacle to a shidduch which is truly his destined match. And if it seems that the beard hinders the shidduch, this itself proves that it is fortunate for him that such a match should not come about. His true match will be arranged for him by Hashem Yisbarach at the right time, and they will lead a happy Jewish life in accordance with Torah and mitzvos.
I would be pleased to hear from you about your family—how long you have been in this country and what they are involved with.
With blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that keeping mitzvos like wearing a beard reflects yirat shamayim and does not hinder finding one's true shidduch. Rather than compromising on Torah values for perceived advantages, one should trust fully in Divine Providence for success in all areas—including marriage.
