במענה על מכתבו המודיע אשר נכנס ללמוד בישיבת תורת אמת, ומבקש ברכה להצליח בלימודו,
הנה ידוע פסק רז"ל יגעתי ומצאתי תאמין, והדבר בידו הוא, ובפרט בימי סגולה האלו דההכנה לקבלת התורה, ויחקוק בלבו ומוחו אופן ההכנה לקבלת התורה שהוא נעשה ונשמע, ששני הענינים גם יחד ישנם בלימוד התורה גופא, היינו שלכל לראש צריך לעסוק בלימוד התורה מתוך קבלת עול, אף שאינו מבין עדיין הנחיצות של יגיעת נפש ויגיעת בשר בזה, ורק אח"כ יזכה לנשמע, ובאופן כזה הרי מקבלים את התורה וזוכים ללמדה בהצלחה ביראת שמים ולכווין אל האמת, וכמובא כ"ז בכמה מקומות בתורת החסידות היא תורת דברי אלקים חיים.

In response to your letter informing me that you have begun studying at Yeshivas Toras Emes and are requesting a blessing for success in your studies: It is well known what our Sages ruled—Yagati u'Matzasi Ta'amin ("If I have toiled and found [success], believe it")—and this matter is in your hands. Especially during these auspicious days of preparation for receiving the Torah, you should engrave upon your heart and mind the manner of preparing to receive the Torah, which is Na'aseh v'Nishma ("We will do and we will hear"). Both aspects are present within Torah study itself: First and foremost, one must engage in learning Torah with acceptance of the yoke—even if he does not yet understand the necessity for exertion of both soul and body in this. Only afterward will he merit to 'Nishma' (understanding). In this way, one receives the Torah and merits to study it successfully with awe of Heaven and to aim for truth, as all this is explained in many places in Chassidus, which is the teaching of the words of the living G‑d.

The Rebbe teaches that true success in Torah study requires both effort and an attitude of accepting its obligations even before full understanding. Especially when preparing for receiving the Torah, one should approach learning with dedication and awe of Heaven.
