The 259th Mitzvah
1. The prohibition by which we were warned against making a Hebrew servant do something for which we have no need.
2. This is what is called "עבודת פרך" (back-breaking labor).
3. This is His statement, exalted be He: "לא תרדה בו בפרך" ("you shall not rule over him with rigor," Vayikra 25:43).
4. We should have him work only when need compels us to have that work done; then we may impose it on him.
5. In the language of the Sifra: "'לא תרדה בו בפרך' - שלא תאמר לו הרם את הכוס הזה והוא אינו צריך לו" ("'You shall not rule over him with rigor': that you should not say to him, 'Lift this cup,' when you do not need it"). And likewise anything similar.
6. They gave an example from the lightest and simplest of tasks, and even so it is permitted only at a time of need.
