The commandment to ensure the accuracy of weights, scales, and measures
1. The commandment with which we were commanded to ensure the accuracy of weights, scales, and measures, and to be precise about their exactness.
2. This is as He, may He be exalted, said: "Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin shall you have" (Vayikra 19:36).
3. And the language of the Sifra: "'Just balances'—make the scales just, very precisely; and you already know that an ephah is a measure for dry goods, and a hin is a measure for liquids. All of these are essentially the same matter, even though the types of measures differ, because what is weighed or measured is only the quantity of a specific thing."
4. All these types—that is, scales, weights, dry measures, and liquid measures—are called "measures."
5. And the commandment with which we were commanded to be precise about the exact quantity agreed upon for each type of them is called "the commandment of measures."
6. And the language of the Sifra: "On this condition I took you out of the land of Egypt—on the condition that you accept upon yourselves the commandment of measures, for anyone who acknowledges the commandment of measures acknowledges the Exodus from Egypt, and anyone who denies the commandment of measures denies the Exodus from Egypt."
7. The laws of this commandment have already been explained in chapter 5 of [Bava] Basra.
