VaYomer lo Yehonasan machar chodesh v'nifkadta ki yipaked moshavecha ("Yehonasan said to him: Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be remembered, for your seat will be empty").1 That is, through the self-nullification (bittul) of the recipient, which is the meaning of "for your seat will be empty," remembrance is brought about above (as it also is in the plain sense): through the complete concealment and hiding of the moon on Erev Rosh Chodesh, until not even a point of it remains, "tomorrow" becomes "new" — the renewed birth of the moon, which is the union of the sun and the moon.
In terms of avodah (Divine service), it is through the recipient's bittul that renewal comes about.
Now, for there to be renewal, it must be drawn from a level above Seder Hishtalshelus (the ordered chain of descending worlds), as it will be in the Time to Come, when there will be a renewal in creation because the drawing-down will be from the level of Penimiyus Atik (the inner dimension of Atik).
For all the drawings-down now are only from Chitzoniyus Atik (the outer dimension of Atik), whereas in the Time to Come it will be drawn from the very inner dimension of Atik.2
Now, the revelations of the Time to Come depend on our actions and our service throughout the time of exile,3 and therefore the birth of the moon on Rosh Chodesh, which is a matter of newness, is akin to how they are destined to be renewed like it in the Time to Come.
This is similar to what is explained in the Midrash4 on "They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness": from the fact that a person is renewed every morning as a new creature, "great is Your faithfulness," for this is a parallel to the Resurrection of the Dead, when the Holy One, blessed be He, will revive him with the dew of life.5
However, the main renewal will be specifically in the Time to Come, as explained in Likkutei Torah,6 that then there will be new souls.
And although even now there are new souls, this is not true renewal; the true level of new souls will be specifically in the Time to Come, and this is the meaning of "with their crowns7 on their heads"8 and so on.
Nevertheless, there is a parallel to renewal even now, on Rosh Chodesh, when through bittul and so on one reaches the level of Eden, about which our Sages said:9 "All the prophets prophesied only about the days of Moshiach, but as for the World to Come, 'No eye has seen, O G‑d, except You'10 and so on: this is Eden…"
Now, it must be understood why it says "O G‑d (Elokim), except You," specifically the name Elokim.
Similarly, we must understand what is written in our parsha,11 "May G‑d (HaElokim) give you of the dew of the heavens and of the fat of the earth, and abundant grain and wine." Many places, including the Hemshech of 5666,12 ask why it says Elokim. It would seem that it should have said the name Havayah, since the essence of blessings comes specifically from the name Havayah, and especially Yitzchak's blessings, which are very lofty blessings, as explained in the Siddur at the end of Shaar HaTekios.13
It is also not understood: the Midrash Rabbah14 says, "'Of the dew of the heavens' is Scripture, 'and of the fat of the earth' is Mishnah, 'grain' is Talmud," and so on. What, then, is the meaning of blessing him with Torah? Seemingly, a blessing does not apply to this.
For the Torah was going to be given to Israel in any case at the Giving of the Torah, since the very first intent in the coming-into-being of the worlds was for the sake of the Torah, as our Sages said15 on the verse "In the beginning (Bereishis) G‑d created…": for the sake of Israel, who are called "first (reishis)," and for the sake of the Torah, which is called "first." The Torah was thus fixed in the nature of creation, and as a condition, so that when the condition is void the thing is void, as stated in the Gemara16 on the verse17 "And it was evening… the sixth day": "The Holy One, blessed be He, made a condition with the works of Creation: If Israel fulfills My Torah…" and this is… as it is written,18 "From the heavens… the earth feared and was still…": at first it feared and in the end it was still. If so, the giving of the Torah was a necessity, so how can a blessing apply to it?
It must also be understood: either way, if the intent of the blessing was the study of Torah as it was before the Giving of the Torah, no blessing was needed for that, since the Patriarchs already studied Torah, as our Sages said19 on the verse20 "And Avraham was old": "Avraham our father was an elder and sat in the yeshivah… Yaakov our father was an elder and sat in the yeshivah."
Nor can one say that the intent is the Torah as it is after the Giving of the Torah, since the Torah of the Patriarchs (which includes Yaakov as well) was but "fragrances" compared to the Torah after the Giving of the Torah.21
Seemingly, one could answer that this was according to Yitzchak's initial thought, when he sought to bless Esav; he therefore blessed him with Torah, thinking that through it Esav himself would be refined. And for Esav a blessing for this does apply, since the Torah is a necessity only for Israel.
Still, this is not understood, since in actual fact the blessings were given to Yaakov, as it is written,22 "Now he has taken my blessing," and the blessings are treated as a great matter and so on. Accordingly, what is the meaning of the blessing to Yaakov concerning Torah?
However, the explanation is this:23 The Torah as it was given at the Giving of the Torah is the Torah as it is in itself, whereas Yitzchak's blessing concerned toil (yegiah) in Torah, about which it is said, "He will act for one who waits for Him," and it is stated in the Zohar:24 "those who press themselves in matters of wisdom." Through this one reaches beyond the Torah as it is in itself. For the Torah in itself is the wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He, and higher still is the level of Chochmah Stima'ah (concealed wisdom), and through toil one reaches the level of Eden and so on, about which it is said, "No eye has seen…" as mentioned above, which is altogether beyond the level of Chochmah.
This also explains Yitzchak's initial thought, when he wanted to bless Esav so that Esav would be refined. For seemingly, how does this fit with what actually happened (since the Patriarchs are themselves the Divine chariot25)? But through the blessings he gave Yaakov concerning toil in Torah, the power was given to refine Esav: since through toil one draws down from the level of Eden, one can refine not only kelipas nogah but also the sparks within the three impure kelipos and so on.
This is as explained elsewhere26 concerning "And Yaakov sent… I have sojourned with Lavan":27 at that point he finished the refinement with Lavan and went to refine Esav. For Yaakov himself was then already prepared for this, and from Yaakov's side the refinement was then complete, and this came through the blessings concerning toil in Torah.
The explanation is this: From the side of the Torah as it is in itself, as it was given at the Giving of the Torah, there was no forgetting at all, as our Sages said28 on the verse29 "engraved on the Tablets." Consequently there was no need for toil, only for speech and so on.
And that speech was needed at all is because the Torah was given from above at the Giving of the Torah through speech; therefore man too had to speak words of Torah. This is similar to what is explained in Torah Ohr30 on the verse31 "And G‑d spoke all these words, saying."
In the words of our Sages:32 "Whoever reads and reviews, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him."
For seemingly it is not understood why speech is needed in Torah (both above and below): Torah is a matter of understanding and comprehension, and thought alone should have sufficed. Why is speech needed, which is an act (at least a minor act33)?
Nor can one answer from what is said in Tractate Eruvin34 (quoted in Tanya35), "If it is arranged in all the 248 limbs it is retained, and if not…" For that applied only after the second Tablets were given, when forgetting already existed in the world; but before that, at the Giving of the Torah, when there was no forgetting because it was "engraved" as mentioned above, this cannot be said.
Rather, the reason is this: "Is not My word like fire?"36 The Torah is likened to fire. As an analogy, a flame within a coal is hidden, and drawing the flame out into the open is done by a blowing wind. Similarly with Torah, there had to be speech, through which it is drawn from concealment to revelation. For even from the side of the first Tablets, the Torah was given specifically below and not above, as explained in the discourses on the saying of our Sages,37 "When Moshe ascended on high." Therefore speech in Torah was needed even without Yitzchak's blessing.
What is new in Yitzchak's blessing is toil in Torah, through which even the level of Esav can be refined, namely the sparks within the three impure kelipos (this was the innovation of the second Tablets), since through this one reaches the level of Eden, as mentioned above concerning "He will act for one who waits for Him," for those who press themselves in matters of wisdom. Therefore they can refine Esav.
This is the meaning of "No eye has seen, O G‑d (Elokim), except You": one reaches the level of Elokim that is above revelations. That is why it says "May Elokim give you" specifically, for the blessings are drawn from the level of Elokim that is above all revelations and so on.
This is the meaning of "Yehonasan said to him: Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be remembered, for your seat will be empty." Through "for your seat will be empty," which is utter bittul, not even a point remaining (and this comes through toil), there comes about "you will be remembered," complete renewal, akin to and up to the level of Eden as mentioned above, "until David exceeded"38 and so on, and "David My servant will be prince over them forever,"39 with the coming of our righteous Moshiach, very soon indeed.
