Minhagim for the Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah

The entire Tehillim is recited early in the morning.

A day of farbrengen.

Selichos after midnight, close to it — but on the remaining days, at the pre-dawn watch.

When Nitzavim and Vayeilech are read as separate parshiyos, the maftir, and likewise the seventh aliyah, on Shabbos Parshas Nitzavim begin at "Re'eh nasati lefanecha" and onward.

The Alter Rebbe related: When I was in Mezritch I heard from my teacher and master, the Maggid, in the name of his teacher and master the Baal Shem Tov: The seventh month, which is the first of the months of the year, is blessed by the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself on Shabbos Mevarchim, the last Shabbos of the month of Elul; and it is by the power of this that the Jewish people bless the months eleven times a year. It is written, "Atem nitzavim hayom" — "You are standing today." "Hayom" refers to Rosh Hashanah, which is the day of judgment, as it is written, "Vayehi hayom," which the Targum renders, "And it was the day of the great judgment." And "atem nitzavim" — you stand firm and endure — meaning that you are vindicated in the judgment. On the Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah, which is the last Shabbos of the month of Elul, we read the portion of "Atem nitzavim," for this is the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, on the Shabbos on which we bless the seventh month — the month that is sated and that satiates all Israel with abundant good for the entire year.
