Sharpshtein, Rabbi Azriel Zelig

שארפשטיין, עזריאל זעליג

Rabbi Azriel Zelig Sharpshtein (1929 - 5th of Adar I, 2008) was one of the Rebbe's emissaries and served as a rabbi in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was also a member of the Vaad Rabbanei Lubavitch (Lubavitch Rabbinical Council).

Born in 1929 in New York to his father Avraham Zev Sharpshtein and his mother Esther, he initially studied at the Torah Vodaas Yeshiva in Manhattan until the opening of Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim - Lubavitch in New York.

On the 14th of Elul, 1954, he married his wife, Reva, the daughter of Rabbi Shlomo Aharon Kazarnovsky. That same week, the Rebbe delivered the maamar (Chassidic discourse) L’cha Dodi. Notably, that week also saw the weddings of Rabbi Leibel Groner and Rabbi Yoel Kahn.

Following his marriage, Rabbi Sharpshtein was sent by the Rebbe to Cincinnati, Ohio, to serve as a community rabbi. He received many directives from the Rebbe on how to combat the Reform movement.

He served on the Vaad Rabbanei Lubavitch and continued in the rabbinate until his passing on the 5th of Adar I, 2008.
