יורד לפני התיבה

יורד לפני התיבה (Yored Lifnei HaTeivah) is a term used in Jewish liturgy to describe the person who leads the congregation in prayer, often referred to as the שְׁלִיחַ צִבּוּר (shaliach tzibbur) or חזן (chazzan).

  • יורד (yored) means "descends" or "goes down."
  • לפני התיבה (lifnei ha'teivah) means "before the ark" (or the lectern used for leading prayers).

The phrase "descends before the ark" comes from the historical custom of the prayer leader standing in a lower position, often in front of the Torah ark or bimah, symbolizing humility before Hashem. This person is responsible for reciting prayers on behalf of the congregation, especially during important services like those on Shabbat, Yom Tov, or the High Holidays.
