Yosef Yehuda Chen was a chassid who corresponded with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, regarding matters of personal spiritual practice and communal service, as evident from the Rebbe's letter to him in Elul 5711 (1951).
In his letter, Yosef Yehuda Chen described his daily routine and sought the Rebbe's guidance on the issue of communal prayer, noting that his habit of praying slowly often led him to miss praying with a minyan, and at times even the proper time for prayer. The Rebbe responded by referencing the established conduct of chassidim, sometimes directed by the Rebbeim, to participate in key communal elements of prayer—such as hearing Barechu, Kedushah, and the Torah reading with a minyan—while still allowing themselves to pray at their own deliberate pace. The Rebbe further cited a teaching that true communal prayer involves gathering and uniting all ten soul powers in the act of prayer.
The Rebbe also encouraged Chen to participate in the upcoming Chai Elul gathering and to publicize teachings from the recent Shabbat Mevarchim Elul in an appropriate manner. Additionally, recognizing Chen's role as a fundraiser for Beis Rivkah, the Rebbe reminded him of a saying from the Previous Rebbe: "One should collect materiality and sow spirituality," and blessed him with abundant success in this dual mission.
The correspondence reflects the Rebbe's personal attention to both the spiritual and practical aspects of Chen's life.
