Av 22 – Igeres Hakodesh, Chapter 7

The Alter Rebbe begins here by discussing the nature of the divine illumination, the הארה זו—this radiance—that comes from the Ein Sof, the Infinite One. He explains that above, in the higher realms, this illumination shines and spreads in a manner that is truly בלי גבול ותכלית—without any limitation or end.

This means that in its source, the light of G‑d is absolutely infinite, giving life to worlds that are themselves hidden and beyond comprehension, as is described in the Idra Rabba. There is no boundary or limit to how far this divine energy extends in the spiritual realms.

The Alter Rebbe is emphasizing that the original divine light is not measured or divided in any way; it is boundless and sustains an endless array of hidden worlds, far beyond what we can imagine.

However, the Alter Rebbe points out that when this infinite illumination descends below, into our world, it does not remain in its original, unlimited state. Instead, it comes down through many צמצומים—contractions or concealments—so that it can give life to created beings, to all the creatures and things that exist in the lower worlds.

Through this process, the light is divided and measured. In general, it becomes split into the number תרי"ג—613—which corresponds to the 613 commandments of the Torah. The infinite light is thus channeled and apportioned in a way that it can be received by the finite creations below.

This is a crucial point: although the divine light is infinite in its source, in order for it to be accessible and meaningful within creation, it must be limited and divided according to the structure of the mitzvos.

The Alter Rebbe elaborates that these 613 divisions are not arbitrary. Rather, they are the 613 distinct ways in which this divine illumination is drawn down from the Ohr Ein Sof—the Infinite Light of G‑d—to shine specifically into the soul of man.

He explains that the human soul itself is composed of רמ"ח אברים ושס"ה גידים—248 limbs and 365 sinews. Just as the body is structured with these components, so too the soul is made up of 613 spiritual parts, each corresponding to one of the mitzvos.

Each mitzvah draws down a particular aspect of the divine light into a specific part of the soul. The structure of the mitzvos and the structure of the soul are thus intimately connected, with every limb and sinew of the soul receiving its vitality through its corresponding mitzvah.

The Alter Rebbe now clarifies that the main purpose for which this divine illumination descends and is drawn down into the lower worlds is for the sake of man. The ultimate goal of all the worlds, all the created beings and entities, is the human being.

He says that all of creation exists so that the soul of man can receive this divine light through the mitzvos. The entire process of the light descending, being contracted, and divided into 613 channels is for the sake of the soul, which is the centerpiece and purpose of creation, as is well known.

This highlights the centrality of man in the divine plan: everything in the worlds above and below is directed toward enabling the soul to fulfill the mitzvos and thereby draw down the light of G‑d.

At this point, the Alter Rebbe notes that this number—613—is a general number. It is the basic framework for how the divine light is apportioned in creation and in the soul.

He is preparing us to understand that while 613 is the general count, there is much more detail and complexity within each mitzvah, which he will explain next.

But, the Alter Rebbe continues, when we look more specifically, each and every mitzvah itself is divided into countless details and particulars—פרטים רבים לאין קץ ותכלית—without end or limit.

This means that the divine illumination is not only divided into 613 general channels, but each mitzvah contains within it an infinite number of specific applications and details. The light becomes more and more particularized as it descends into the world of action and halacha.

These countless details are what we call the גופי הלכות פרטיות—the specific bodies of halachic laws—within each mitzvah. There is no set number for these; the details and laws that make up each mitzvah are innumerable.

Every mitzvah is made up of many halachic particulars, each one a distinct way in which the divine will is expressed and drawn down into the world. The infinite complexity of halacha reflects the infinite depth of the divine light as it is applied in our lives.

The Alter Rebbe brings a verse to illustrate this point: "ששים המה מלכות"—"Sixty are the queens"—referring to the sixty tractates of the Mishnah. "ועלמות אין מספר"—"and maidens without number"—refers to the countless halachos, the individual laws.

He explains that these halachos are each a channel for the drawing down of the Ratzon Elyon—the supernal will—into the world. Every detail of halacha is a unique expression of G‑d's will, and through them, the divine light is brought into every aspect of creation.

The Alter Rebbe now explains that just as we discussed the flow of Divine light into the world, the same principle applies to the neshama—the soul—of a person. Every individual soul is not an isolated entity, but is part of a much greater whole.

He teaches that כל הנשמות שבעולם היו כלולות באדה"ר—all the souls that ever exist in the world were originally included within Adam HaRishon. Adam’s soul was not just one soul, but a comprehensive soul that contained within it the root of every Jewish soul that would ever come into being.

In general terms, the soul of Adam was divided into the number תרי"ג—613, corresponding to the רמ"ח אברים ושס"ה גידים—the 248 limbs and 365 sinews. Just as the human body is made up of these 613 components, so too the collective soul was divided in this way, with each part corresponding to a particular aspect of the body and its spiritual function.

However, the division does not stop there. In a more detailed way, the soul is divided into These sparks are the individual souls of all of Israel, from the days of the Avos—the Patriarchs—and the Shevatim—the Tribes—throughout all generations, up until the coming of Moshiach and even including that time. Every Jewish soul, no matter when or where it appears, is a spark that originated in Adam HaRishon’s soul.

The Alter Rebbe brings the verse, והיה מספר בני ישראל כחול הים אשר לא ימד ולא יספר מרוב—"And the number of the Children of Israel will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or counted because of their multitude." This means that in the time of Moshiach, the full potential of all these sparks will be realized, and the Jewish people will be so numerous that they cannot be counted, just as the sand of the sea is beyond measure.

In summary, the soul of Adam HaRishon was a collective soul, containing within it all the souls of Israel. These souls were first divided into 613 general parts, but then subdivided into an infinite number of sparks, each one destined to become an individual Jewish soul throughout history, culminating in the ultimate fulfillment at the time of Moshiach.
