Cheshvan 10 - Igeres HaKodesh, Chapter 26

The upper beings—the angels and spiritual entities—do not have the power to לברר ולהעלות—to refine and elevate—that which fell into קליפת נוגה—the shell of Nogah—through the shattering of the vessels. This ability is given only to those below, meaning us, the souls in this world.

Why is this so? Because only those who are enclothed in a physical body, which the Alter Rebbe calls משכא דחויא—the skin of the serpent—coming from קליפת נוגה, have a connection to the Kelipos. Our animal soul and our physical body are rooted in kelipas nogah, and that is precisely what gives us the ability to engage with and refine it.

When a Jew weakens the power of kelipas nogah—by breaking his desires, by subduing the other side, by not giving in to his temptations—he is actively refining and elevating the sparks trapped within it. This process is called אתכפיא ס"א—subduing the other side.

As a result, ויתפרדו כל פועלי און—all those who do evil, the forces of impurity—are scattered and separated. This scattering allows the holy sparks to be extracted and elevated. The entire process of refinement and elevation is possible only because we, in our physical state, are connected to the Kelipos and can therefore affect them.

This is why the upper beings—the angels and spiritual entities—come to listen to the novel insights of Torah that are revealed by those below, by Jews in this world. The upper worlds cannot themselves reveal these insights; they must come to us to hear them.

What are these חידושי תורה—novel Torah insights? They are the hidden secrets of wisdom that were previously כבושים בגולה—imprisoned in exile—until now. These sparks of wisdom were trapped and concealed, and only now, through the efforts of those below, are they being revealed and brought into the open.

When a Jew learns Torah and brings out a new understanding, he is not just discovering something for himself—he is actually releasing a spark that was in exile, and even the highest angels come to hear and benefit from this revelation.

It is not only the greatest Torah scholars or the most learned who can reveal these hidden sparks. כל איש ישראל—every Jew—has the ability to לגלות תעלומות חכמה—to reveal hidden wisdom—and to innovate new insights in Torah.

This applies to all areas of Torah: whether in הלכות—halachic rulings, אגדות—the stories and teachings of the sages, נגלה—the revealed aspects of Torah, or נסתר—the hidden, mystical dimensions. Each person, according to the root of his soul, has his own unique portion to reveal and to innovate.

Every Jew is empowered to bring out something new in Torah, to uncover a depth or a perspective that was hidden until now. This is not reserved for the elite; it is the birthright and responsibility of every member of Israel.

Not only is every Jew able to do this, but he is actually obligated—ומחוייב בדבר—to do so. Each person must complete his soul by elevating all the sparks that have fallen to his portion and lot in this world.

It is a personal mission: every soul has its own sparks that it is meant to refine and elevate. This is well-known in Chassidus—that each person is assigned specific sparks that only he can elevate, and it is his duty to do so. By fulfilling this mission, a person brings his soul to its completion and fulfills his unique purpose in creation.

Every word of Torah, and especially a דבר הלכה—a halachic ruling—is itself a spark of the Shechinah, a spark of the Divine Presence. This is because the שכינה—the Shechinah—is the דבר ה'—the word of G‑d. As the Gemara says, דבר ה' - זו הלכה—the word of G‑d, this is halacha.

This is the secret of מלכות דאצילות—the level of Malchus of Atzilus—which enclothes itself in חכמה דאצילות—the wisdom of Atzilus—and then becomes enclothed in מלכות דיצירה—the Malchus of Yetzirah. Through the shattering of the vessels, these sparks descended into קליפת נוגה—kelipas nogah.

When a Jew learns Torah and especially when he clarifies a halacha, he is actually elevating a spark of the Shechinah from its exile in kelipas nogah and returning it to its source in holiness. This is the deeper meaning of learning Torah and clarifying halacha: it is a spiritual act of redemption and elevation.

This is the meaning of what the Gemara says: Anyone who occupies himself with Torah, the Holy One, blessed be He, says, "I consider it as if he has redeemed Me and My children from among the nations of the world."

What does this mean? The Divine Presence and the souls of Israel are, so to speak, in exile among the nations, surrounded by the forces of impurity. When a Jew learns Torah, he is redeeming these sparks, elevating them from their captivity and returning them to holiness. This is the tremendous power of Torah study: it is not just an intellectual exercise, but an act of spiritual redemption for the Shechinah and for all of Israel.
