The advice for how to accept suffering with love is the advice of G‑d, as spoken through the mouths of our sages: לפשפש במעשיו—to examine one’s own deeds. When a person faces hardship, instead of running away or resisting, he should look inward and search his actions. He will find within himself עונות הצריכין מירוק יסורים—sins that require cleansing through suffering. This is not about self-blame, but about honest self-reflection, recognizing that perhaps there are things for which he needs this purification.
When a person does this, he will come to see with his own eyes גודל אהבתו אליו המקלקלת השורה—the greatness of G‑d’s love for him, which "breaks the line," meaning it goes beyond the normal order of things. The Alter Rebbe gives a powerful analogy: imagine a great and awesome king who, in his own honor and by himself, washes the filth from his only son. He does not send a servant; he does it himself out of his immense love. So too, when G‑d Himself cleanses a Jew through suffering, it is a sign of His deep love, as it says, אם רחץ ה' צואת בנות ציון—if G‑d washes away the filth of the daughters of Zion, with a spirit of justice and cleansing.
When you realize that it is Hashem Himself who is tending to you, not delegating the task to any intermediary, you begin to appreciate the preciousness of this relationship. This realization awakens a reciprocal love in the heart of anyone who truly understands—וכמים הפנים אל פנים—just as water reflects a face, so too the heart of man to man. When you see G‑d’s love for you, your own love for Him is aroused in return.
This love is more precious than all the life of the worlds. As the verse says, מה יקר חסדך—how precious is Your kindness, and כי טוב חסדך מחיים—Your kindness is better than life. The kindness that G‑d shows to all the worlds is the source of their life, as it says, מכלכל חיים בחסד—He sustains life with kindness. But the special love and kindness that G‑d shows to a Jew through this personal attention is even greater and more precious than the general life-force given to all creation.
When a person accepts his suffering with this perspective, then גם ה' יתן הטוב ויאר פניו אליו—G‑d will also grant him good and shine His face upon him with a revealed love. What was previously hidden within open rebuke becomes revealed as love. The hardships are sweetened at their root, and all judgments are nullified and removed. The suffering itself is transformed, and the person merits to experience G‑d’s kindness openly.
