Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 12th of Nissan.
The hope is strong, based on the content of your letter, that you feel and also see how necessary your activity and assistance are for your household. On the contrary, now after the passing of your husband, alav hashalom, this necessity has grown even more. It is understood that you will overcome your pain and emotional state and do everything within your ability to help those close to you—not only your immediate family but also those in your general surroundings—for all Israel are friends. Even if until now you were not accustomed to this, surely the thought that this is the truest and loftiest satisfaction you can bring to the soul of the departed will give you additional strength and encouragement to do all of the above. Additionally, this is a commandment of our holy Torah, a Torah of life; and a commandment of Torah is also an empowerment. Although it is understood that all beginnings are difficult—especially in such situations as mentioned above and with such an emotional state—nevertheless, as stated above, G‑d's command also grants strength proportionate to the difficulties. Our Sages have already informed us: "One who comes to purify is assisted" (Yoma 38b). I would be pleased to hear good news about this...
With blessing for good tidings.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that helping others after personal loss not only benefits those around us but also brings true spiritual satisfaction and strength to oneself and the soul of the departed. Torah's commandments empower us to overcome even great difficulties.
