Shalom u'Vrachah!
This is in response to your letter from the 10th of Teves—may it soon be transformed to joy and gladness—and as you requested, my reply comes on the day your letter was received, regarding the wording for a matzeivah (tombstone).
In general, in such matters it is most appropriate that it should be similar to the matzeivos in that same cemetery, as explained in many places—and even according to halachah—the conduct regarding one who is interred in a cemetery is relevant and connected to all others there. Within this framework itself, it is advisable that those who knew Reb B. a"h should compose the text based on their knowledge.
Since you are asking my opinion on this, I must add what I have instructed several people in similar situations: to mention in the text that he was among the Chassidim of the Rebbe—specifying the name (of the Rebbe)—and regarding this case, both names should be mentioned.
The basis for my suggestion in such cases comes from what I saw in the wording of the matzeivah composed by the Rebbe for his mother, the Rebbetzin z"l, where he mentioned "the righteous foundations of the world," i.e., Rebbes by their names. If you wish, this is also alluded to in the Mishnah when recounting the wording of a question up until Chevron (Tamid chapter 3). After all, every aspect of a matzeivah is for merit and elevation of the soul.
With honor and blessing for good news—including regarding your health in its plain sense.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that when composing a matzeivah inscription, it should follow local custom but also mention explicitly which Rebbes influenced or led the deceased. This honors their spiritual heritage and brings merit and elevation to their soul.
