Joy, Charity, and Interpreting Torah Readings and Dreams

The Rebbe advises focusing on joy and charity as channels for blessing, rather than dwelling on dreams or events during Torah readings. He references Halachic sources that dismiss heavenly signs in such matters and encourages giving charity throughout Kislev, especially on Yud Tes Kislev.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 13th of Kislev with its enclosure and the pan that will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal. In addition to what I wrote in my letter to Tzeirei Agudas Chabad (sent separately), which is understood and obvious that you are foremost in this matter, this is based on our Sages' statement that "one who causes others to act is greater than one who acts himself." Therefore, you deserve much reward and will continue to receive even more. However, the channel and vessel for receiving Hashem's blessing is through joy and gladness of heart, as explained in many places.

Regarding your writing about events during Torah reading and a dream etc.—you should completely dismiss these thoughts. Especially since words of Torah are actually uplifting for the heart, and the purpose of Torah is to draw revealed goodness down below ten handbreadths.

Concerning this matter: The opinions on this are well known in Shulchan Aruch of Rabbeinu HaZaken, section 288:7. The conclusion of that section is that there is no heavenly sign in this at all—and you should also bring joy to others. My intention is that you should set aside eighteen lira for tzedakah over the days until the end of Kislev—the month of miracles and redemption—in addition to giving tzedakah on the auspicious day of Yud Tes Kislev approaching soon.

Blessings for good news in all mentioned above and with blessings for the Festival of Redemption.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that joy and charity are key vessels for Divine blessing. He instructs not to dwell on dreams or perceived signs during Torah readings but instead focus on positive action—especially giving tzedakah throughout Kislev—to bring revealed good into one's life.
