* * *

* * *

B"H, Days of Selichos, 5720.

Brooklyn, NY.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

The two hundredth year since the passing of the Baal Shem Tov z"l.

To the sons and daughters of Israel in every place—may Hashem be upon you for life—abundant peace and blessings!

The days of Selichos at the end of the year, and the days of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah at the start of the year, underscore the great matter of teshuvah—with which one concludes and begins the year. Teshuvah, as is known, contains two main parts: charatah al ha'avar—an inner regret for what has passed; and kabbalah al ha'asid—a deep resolve for the future.

The purpose of teshuvah, however, is teshuvah—returning to one's previous state—so that one will be pleasing before Hashem and beloved by Him as before the sin (to once again be accepted and cherished by Hashem as before committing a transgression). This means, firstly, that teshuvah must be carried out in a way that leaves no trace for the future—not only in action and conduct (maaseh), but also in speech and thought (dibur u'machshavah).

Secondly—and here lies the novelty of teshuvah—that teshuvah removes all stains even from the past. Although the past is seemingly outside a person's control, Hashem—Who is entirely beyond time (for with Him past, present, and future are united in one moment)—has endowed teshuvah with a special power: through it a person becomes "baal habayis" (master) over his past as well; he can change it—not just neutralize it but actually repair it and transform it into good, as our Sages say: "Zdonos naasu lo k'zechuyos" (intentional sins become like merits).

This unique power of teshuvah—which gives a person mastery over his past—is possible because on one hand, as mentioned above, teshuvah draws its strength from a "source" higher than time. On the other hand, a Jew must utilize this power in a way that penetrates his entire being—reaching even that part of his soul which is also above time and its changes—the pnimiyus hanefesh and etzem hanefesh (the inner core and essence of the soul), nefesh haElokis (the G‑dly soul), which is always faithful to Him (true to Hashem), for it is literally a part of G‑dliness above.

On this basis—the deep bond between a Jew and his Creator—the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, expressed that a Jew neither wants nor can be separated from Elokus (G‑dliness). And so Hashem says: "Ahavti eschem amar Hashem" (I have loved you says Hashem), and nothing can change this.

Just as teshuvah encompasses and penetrates one's entire being—from one's essence to daily conduct—so too measure for measure it brings to a Jew what is highest and deepest: he becomes attached to Shechinah (Divine Presence), beloved and cherished, close and dear—even meriting a kesivah vachasimah tovah l'shanah tovah u'mesukah (a good inscription and sealing for a good sweet year) in children, life, sustenance in abundance—in all daily needs.

With blessings for a kesivah vachasimah tovah l'shanah tovah u'mesukah b'gashmiyus u'beruchniyus gam yachad (a good inscription and sealing for a good sweet year physically and spiritually together),

Menachem Schneersohn

Summary

Teshuvah empowers us not only to resolve our future but also to transform our past. By connecting with our innermost G‑dly soul—which remains eternally bound to Hashem—we can return to our original state of closeness with G‑d beyond all limitations.
