במענה למכתבו מו' לחדש אלול, חדש הרחמים, בו כותב אודות סדר בימי הרחמים האלו.
והנה אף כי בדברי רבנו הזקן, המלך נמצא בשדה ומקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות וכו' (לקוטי תורה פ' ראה, ד"ה אני לדודי) מובן וגם פשוט שצריך להרבות בעניני תפלה תורה ומצות, וכסדר הכתוב אני לדודי (בתחלה) ודודי לי, ראשי תיבות אלול, וכמבואר בספרי קבלה מוסר וחסידות, והסדר בזה בכלל וכמובא באחרונים, שמרבים בתפלה ובתחנונים בערך שאר השנה (עיין ברכי יוסף, הובא במטה אפרים סי' תקפ"א סעיף יא*) וכן בלימוד התורה, מרבים בחלק השייך לעבודת השי"ת ולהדר בקיום מצותי', ובספרי חב"ד הרי מיוחד לזה: אגרת התשובה (חלק ג' מספר התניא) דרך החיים (לבנו אדמו"ר האמצעי) וכו'.
ויהי רצון שיעשה בכל האמור, יעשה לשון מעשין על הצדקה, כפי' יותר מרגילות, ויותר מאשר שכלו מורה לו, והרי נצטווינו בטל רצונך מפני רצונו וכו'.

In response to your letter from the 6th of Elul, the month of mercy, in which you write about your routine during these days of mercy.
Although in the words of our Rebbe the Alter Rebbe—'the King is in the field and receives everyone with a pleasant countenance,' etc. (Likkutei Torah Parshas Re'eh, Discourse Ani LeDodi)—it is understood and also obvious that one must increase in matters of prayer, Torah, and mitzvos. This follows the order written: Ani LeDodi (at first) and Dodi Li—the initials spell Elul—as explained in books of Kabbalah, Mussar, and Chassidus. The general order is as brought by later authorities: to increase prayer and supplication compared to the rest of the year (see Birkei Yosef as brought in Mateh Ephraim siman 581:11*), and likewise in Torah study—one should increase in areas related to service of Hashem and be meticulous in fulfilling His mitzvos. In Chabad texts there are works dedicated to this: Iggeres HaTeshuvah (part three of Tanya), Derech HaChaim (by our Rebbe the Mitteler Rebbe), etc.
May it be G‑d's will that you do all the above; 'do' refers specifically to charity—giving more than usual and more than your intellect dictates. After all, we are commanded: 'Nullify your will before His will,' etc.
Blessings for success in Torah study with fear of Heaven and for a good inscription and sealing [in the Book of Life].

The Rebbe teaches that during Elul one should increase prayer, Torah study focused on serving Hashem, and especially charity—going beyond one's norm or logic—in preparation for a good inscription for the coming year.
