Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 16th of Tammuz—which has reached me—in which you write briefly about your life story and conclude that you are finally following the path of the King, King of the Universe, according to the guidance of our Torah of Life and fulfillment of its mitzvos, about which it is said "v'chai bahem" (and you shall live by them). Recently you were offered an honorable proposal and your parents' attitude toward this proposal is due to the fact that the person in question is from among our Sephardic Jewish brethren from Morocco, and you ask my opinion on this.
Since, as you wrote, she possesses fear of G‑d and conducts herself appropriately for a Jewish woman—each one of whom is called a daughter of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah—it has already been said about this: "Isha yirat Hashem hi tithallel" (A woman who fears G‑d will be praised). You should pursue this proposal until its successful completion at an auspicious time. It is understood and obvious that there is absolutely no place for reservations or to create any separation—G‑d forbid—between Ashkenazim and Sephardim. Especially in recent years many have intermarried between them and are building their homes on foundations of Torah and mitzvah, happy both materially and spiritually.
Since every matter requires the blessing of Hashem and heavenly assistance—especially in such a fundamental matter as this—you should increase diligence in Torah study, including regular study in the inner dimension of Torah which in our generation has been revealed through Chassidus. Especially since this year marks two hundred years since the passing (yahrzeit) of our teacher the Baal Shem Tov z"l—a year propitious for spreading his wellsprings, which are precisely the teachings of Chassidus.
It would be proper to have your tefillin checked as well as to give a few coins to tzedakah every weekday before morning prayers.
Blessings for good news in all the above matters,
In the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlit"a,
Mazkir (secretary)
Summary
The Rebbe teaches there is no reason for hesitation regarding marriage between Ashkenazim and Sephardim when both parties are committed to Torah values. He encourages strengthening Torah study and mitzvah observance as foundations for a blessed home.
