Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the second day of Parshas Emor.
At an auspicious time, all those you wrote about will again be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal l'havdil ben chayim mezal ziya, according to the content of your letter.
Regarding your question whether to proceed with a strong hand, etc.—in general, it is well known the instruction of the great teacher in Hilchos Deos (the Rambam), to follow the middle path. However, unfortunately, doctors in America—especially regarding children—specifically advise fulfilling their wishes to the utmost. Yet recently even they have begun to reconsider this approach. Since one must rely on doctors' advice, it is understood that their opinion should be considered; but first explain to them this point about the golden mean—the middle path—especially when undesirable results are observed. After this, act according to the doctors' instructions but do not be overly strict in fulfilling every detail.
Since we are now in the days between Pesach and Shavuos—a good time for both physical and spiritual health—may the situation improve in all matters you wrote about with revealed and apparent good: true good that is good for Heaven and good for people and good that produces fruit (Kiddushin 40a).
Blessings for good news in all of the above.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that child rearing should follow a balanced approach as advocated by the Rambam—the golden mean—while also considering medical advice. One should explain this perspective to doctors and seek outcomes that are truly beneficial both spiritually and physically.
