Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 7th of Adar and previous ones. I read with special interest what you wrote about expanding the network of schools, especially for those ages not included in general compulsory education—even though it is unfortunate that the number of students is currently small. It is a pity that this matter apparently has not found a fitting response yet. In a few weeks, the issue of the long summer vacation will arise again, when many more hours of idleness are added to the lives of youth—even the youngest ones. According to reports, only a small percentage attend summer camps or similar programs.
I read with particular interest what you wrote regarding the teachers’ union organizing memorial gatherings for the Baal Shem Tov z"l. It is well known that even before his public revelation, the Baal Shem Tov’s first work was educating Jewish children—beginning their education with blessings of thanks to the Creator and Ruler of the world, responding "Baruch Hu u'Varuch Shemo," etc. In education, proof of a method’s validity lies in its fruits and further results under various—even unusual—conditions. It is evident that over two hundred years, the Baal Shem Tov’s approach has encompassed hundreds of thousands among Israel from all circles and types.
It should be noted that unfortunately there are those who mistakenly think that the Baal Shem Tov was lenient (G‑d forbid) regarding practical mitzvos. For some this error comes from not knowing our Sages’ clear ruling: "Not study but action is primary," which is also emphasized in many places in the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov and his students and their students.
On this occasion I wish to clarify through you whether there is any basis to a strange report appearing in newspapers here—that supposedly schools in Eretz HaKodesh are introducing comparative religion studies into their curriculum! Even if it will be stressed how different these religions are etc., it is still astonishing—why confuse students’ minds regarding Christianity, Islam and so on? Moreover, according to these reports this subject was introduced even into secular school curricula! In normal times I would say there is no basis at all for such news—but especially in our era it fits our Sages’ saying: "Do not dismiss anything." Thank you in advance if you have information about this and inform me.
One reason for my delayed response was also the tragedy in Agadir. Although recent reports from there told of certain students being saved—thank G‑d—even one Jewish soul is an entire world; how much more so when many are involved. May it be G‑d’s will that our fellow Jews everywhere experience no distressing matters at all; may all strengths and resources be used only for good things—progressively better and brighter.
As we stand just after Purim—about which it says: "For the Jews there was light and joy and gladness and honor" (literally—the verse never departs from its plain meaning), as well as its inner meaning per our Sages: "Light means Torah," etc.—may it be so for each one of us within all Israel.
With honor and blessings for good news.
Regarding your letter’s conclusion where you allow yourself to say etc., that every believing Jew must pray for your wellbeing and success—I strongly hope you did not suspect me of any contrary attitude; especially given how much this point is emphasized in the Baal Shem Tov’s approach—that is Chassidus. Even regarding our Torah’s commandment "You shall surely rebuke your fellow," it is preceded by "You shall not hate your brother in your heart," followed immediately by "Love your fellow as yourself—I am Hashem." My absolute belief—and moreover I think this is based on sound reason—is that every Jew’s wellbeing and success depend on our holy Torah (called Toras Chaim—teaching how to live true life worthy of its name) and fulfillment of mitzvos about which it says: "And you shall live by them." If this applies to every individual Jew—it certainly applies even more so to those who influence others; as their circle grows larger so does their need—and exclusivity—for linking peace and success with Torah and mitzvos.
Summary
The Rebbe highlights the importance of expanding authentic Jewish education based on Torah values for all ages—not just those required by law—and cautions against introducing confusing or foreign concepts like comparative religion into curricula. True success comes through connection with Torah and mitzvos.
