Shalom u'Vrachah!

To the honored participants in the farbrengen of the day of good tidings—the day of redemption of our Master the Alter Rebbe, and our own redemption and the redemption of our souls—may G‑d be upon you for life—abundant peace and blessing!

It was with pleasure that I learned about your farbrengen on this bright day, Yud Tes Kislev, which is called by our Rebbeim “the festival of festivals.” Surely, as in every gathering of Jews who are careful regarding G‑d’s word, words of Torah were heard—and in a way that brings speech to action; that is, to an increase in Torah and mitzvos throughout the coming year. A good thought is joined by G‑d to action—especially when such a thought is accepted upon oneself on an auspicious day.

And as our Sages say: merit is brought about on a meritorious day. May it be His will that this beginning take place during these days of Chanukah. The halachah follows Beis Hillel: we increase and continue adding light with each candle. The hint here is understood according to what is said: "Ki ner mitzvah v'Torah or" (For a mitzvah is a candle and Torah is light), and the miracle was with oil—which as explained in many places alludes to secrets and inner dimensions of Torah.

May each person illuminate themselves and their surroundings with “ner mitzvah v'Torah or” (the candle of mitzvah and the light of Torah), and with the illumination within Torah—that is, the inner dimension of Torah—which in our generation has been revealed through Chassidus.

This is especially relevant as we are now in the two-hundredth year since the passing (yahrzeit) of our teacher, the Baal Shem Tov z"l. As is known from his holy letter: when his wellsprings—meaning his teachings, which are Chassidus—are spread outward (“yafutzu mayanosecha chutza”), then “ka’asi mar”—this refers to King Moshiach—will come.

With honor and blessings for good tidings in all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that inspiration from Yud Tes Kislev should lead to increased Torah study and mitzvah observance all year. Like Chanukah’s growing light, we must spread both practical mitzvos and Chassidus—the inner light—to ourselves and others.
