Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 19th of Teves, in which you write the reasoning that there are those who doubt whether they should also report about shortcomings, and that there were sharp debates about this.

It is truly astonishing to have doubt in such a matter, since I have written about this several times—especially after the announcement that in any case there are people who report such things but as outsiders, and therefore exaggerate etc., so the results are the opposite of what those who oppose such reporting hope for.

My main wonder is that we have received from our holy Rebbeim a clear directive to examine such ideas by knowing their source—if there is any doubt (printed in Hayom Yom for 23 Sivan)—whether by doing so it will add or detract from practical beneficial matters and actual service. And it is certain that if it becomes known that no one reports to a certain place about shortcomings, this will not lessen the deficiency but rather increase it—and this is obvious.

What could be clearer than our Sages' saying: "If only the fear of Heaven were upon you as the fear of flesh and blood." May it be G‑d's will that such reporting will decrease—not because of the inappropriate reasoning mentioned above but because the shortcomings and their causes will diminish until they disappear entirely. As stated at the end of Iggeres HaKodesh section 26: letters should be written not to clarify clarifications but to add in light etc., and this is clear.

Regarding what you wrote about matters still requiring correction: certainly you should raise them again and again—especially since one can say that the usual style regarding rebuke—"You shall surely rebuke even a hundred times"—is not an exaggeration (see Shulchan Aruch Admor Hazaken section 156:7 and its sources).

Blessings for good news in all of the above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that honest reporting of shortcomings is vital for true improvement. Rebuke should be persistent yet constructive, aiming for positive change rather than criticism for its own sake. Communication must remain sincere and focused on growth.
