במענה על מכתבו מה' טבת.
לאחרי כל החשבונות, חשבונו של עולם וכו' הנה סו"ס מסיים במכתבו בהנוגע לשכירות ושהוא בע"ח בדאלארען וכו'!
והאומנם גם לדעתו יש להרעיש עולמות על ענינים כאלו? ובפרט שבהשתדלות קצת יסלק החוב שלו בגשמיות ובהשתדלות קצת יותר בידו לסלק גם החוב שלו ברחניות [שהרי כשאדם מקדש עצמו מעט מלמטה מקדשין אותו הרבה מלמעלה], ואם כן הכל כמונח בקופסא, ורק שצריך הוא לפתוח הקופסא, ומספיק פתח כחודו של מחט ואז יפתח השי"ת כפתחו של אולם.
במ"ש שאין יודע מה מטרתו. - כבר הודיעו רז"ל במשנתם, שנברא לשמש את קונו, אלא שכמה אופנים בזה, ומה איכפת לו אם יעשה זה ע"י קירוב לבם של התלמידים שלו לאבינו שבשמים וע"י שיהי' שליח לתפלות בנ"י וכו' ובלבד שימלא התפקיד במנוחה ושמחה וטוב לבב.
ויהי רצון שלא יחפוץ איינריידין זיך, שהענינים מבלבלים אותו, כי אין בלבולים ורק מחכים שיפתח כחודו של מחט ואז יהי' כנ"ל.
נהניתי מהדו"ח מבקורו עם התלמידים שלו, ויהי רצון שע"ד האמור לא יסתפק במעמדו כי אם יתפשט בדרכי נועם, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.

Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 5th of Teves.
After all the calculations—worldly calculations and so on—you finally conclude your letter regarding rent and that you are in debt in dollars, etc.! But do you really think it is worth making such a commotion over these matters? Especially since with a bit of effort you can pay off your material debt, and with a bit more effort you can also clear your spiritual debt [for when a person sanctifies himself a little below, he is sanctified greatly from Above]. So everything is already as if placed in a box; you just need to open the box. If you make even an opening as small as the eye of a needle, then Hashem will open for you an opening as wide as a hall.
You write that you do not know your purpose. Our Sages have already taught in their Mishnah that one was created to serve his Creator. There are many ways to do this—so what difference does it make if you fulfill this by bringing your students closer to our Father in Heaven or by being a prayer leader for the Jewish people? The main thing is to fulfill your role with calmness, joy, and a good heart.
May it be G‑d's will that you not desire to convince yourself that circumstances are confusing you—for there is no confusion; they are only waiting for you to make an opening as small as the eye of a needle, and then it will be as above.
I was pleased by your report about your visit with your students. May it be G‑d's will that—as mentioned—you do not settle for your current state but expand pleasantly. Nothing stands in the way of willpower.

The Rebbe teaches that both material and spiritual challenges can be overcome with sincere effort. By taking even small steps forward and serving one's purpose joyfully and calmly, one opens the way for Divine assistance and personal growth.
