The Importance of Every Mitzvah and the Nature of Torah Compromises

ב"ה, י"ז אלול, תשי"ח ברוקלין.
The Rebbe explains that every mitzvah, whether from the Torah or Rabbinic origin, is important for every Jew. He clarifies that what appear as compromises in Torah, like Prozbul or selling chametz, are integral parts of Torah itself, not true compromises.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I am surprised by your suggestion in your letter that the matters you write about are, G‑d forbid, not important. It is self-evident that all 613 mitzvos, those from the Rabbis and the fine points of the Scribes, are important for all Jews and were given with great effort by the Holy One Blessed be He to Moshe Rabbeinu at Sinai for all Jews. Their importance is so great that in the words of Rambam (Hilchos Teshuvah 3:8), one who says even a single verse or word of the Written or Oral Torah was said by Moshe on his own and not from G‑d is called a denier of the Torah; as Rambam concludes there: he has no share in the World to Come.

In the aforementioned general letter, it does not discuss importance in general; it only emphasizes something without which there would be no Jews at all, G‑d forbid. What more do we need than the matter of korbanos? The entire book of Vayikra and a large part of Bamidbar and Seder Kodashim deal only with korbanos. Since the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash we have (as stated in the piyut in Musaf for Yom Kippur) neither incense nor offering—no Jew anywhere in the world has this. Moreover, according to Torah we are now forbidden to bring any korban or incense. Yet "Atem Nitzavim Hayom Kulchem" (You are all standing today), also means literally today.

Your question about fighting against compromises comes at a time when you express yourself that both Written and Oral Torah are full of compromises—like Prozbul, selling chametz, etc. It is self-evident that compromise means—as in English "compromise"—making a concession with Torah. But Prozbul and similar things found in Torah—Written and Oral—which as mentioned above were given to Moshe at Sinai—are part of Torah just like the Ten Commandments.

Based on your quoting verses and sayings of our Sages, I hope you have a set time every day for learning Torah according to Jewish law and custom—morning and evening—and from time to time you add to this as well. This is a sign of vitality—that it grows and increases. May Hashem help you add much more.

With blessing for good news and for being inscribed and sealed for a good year.

My general letter: above Chaf Tes Av 5771.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that every mitzvah—whether Biblical or Rabbinic—is essential for every Jew. What may seem like compromises within Torah are actually integral parts given at Sinai; true compromise would mean deviating from Torah itself.
