In response to your letter from Sunday, Parshas Teitzei, in which you ask about the root of the souls of Chassidei Umos HaOlam. The following is quoted from Harav Hagaon Harav Hachassid Vehatzaddik etc. Moreinu Harav Hillel of Paritch (in Sefer Likutei Biurim 47b): The souls of idol worshippers—their goodness and kindness is not for the sake of fulfilling the will of G‑d nor out of compassion for their fellow; for by nature they are cruel. Rather, all they do is for their own benefit and self-glorification because their soul root is from the three impure kelipos alone—except for Chassidei Umos HaOlam whose source is from nogah, as is known.
You surely know about the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—in Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—and you observe them. At any rate, do so from now on without a vow.
