ובודאי יודע אשר אחד מעיקרי אמונת ישראל, הוא ענין דהשארת הנפש, ואשר הנפש נצחית היא, ולכן אסור להרבות באבלות ר"ל יותר מהכתוב בשולחן ערוך, ופשוט שבאם זה מפריע הלימוד בכלל וללימוד בהתמדה ושקידה, הרי ברור שזה בא מהיצר הרע המנסה לכל אדם למנוע אותו מלעבוד בוראו כהוראת תורתנו הק' ונוסף בזה שבאם ח"ו נשמעים לפיתוייו של היצר הרע, הנה נגרם ג"כ היפך דנחת רוח לנשמתה של הנפטרת כיון שהיצר הרע משתמש בענינה בשביל להחליש את האדם בלימוד התורה, וק"ל.
ועליו להוסיף בהתמדה ושקידה בלימוד התורה שזהו הקורת רוח אמיתי בשביל הנשמה וזהו גם כן הצנור וכלי לקבלת ברכות השי"ת לכל המשפחה לכל אחד מתאים למעמדו ומצבו.
מהנכון אשר בכל יום אחרי תפלת הבקר יאמר השיעור תהלים חדשי - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש -.

We acknowledge receipt of your letter from 5/21, and at an auspicious time, all those you wrote about will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, for what they need according to the content of your letter.
Surely you know that one of the main principles of Jewish faith is the matter of the soul's survival, and that the soul is eternal. Therefore, it is forbidden to increase in mourning—G‑d forbid—beyond what is written in Shulchan Aruch. And it is obvious that if this interferes with learning in general or with diligent and focused study in particular, it is clear this comes from the yetzer hara who tries to prevent every person from serving his Creator as our holy Torah instructs. Furthermore, if—G‑d forbid—one listens to the enticements of the yetzer hara, this also causes the opposite of satisfaction for the soul of the departed, since the yetzer hara uses her matter to weaken a person in Torah study. This should be understood.
One should increase diligence and persistence in Torah study; this brings true satisfaction to the soul and is also a channel and vessel for receiving Hashem's blessings for the entire family, each according to their situation.
It is proper that every day after morning prayers you say the daily Tehillim portion—as Tehillim is divided by days of the month.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that belief in the eternity of the soul means we must not engage in excessive mourning. True comfort for a departed soul comes through increased Torah study and daily recitation of Tehillim after morning prayers.
