Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter, where you ask: Is it permitted for a seventeen-year-old boy to delve deeply? — and you do not specify what matters you mean, but from the continuation of your letter it seems you refer to matters of the duties of the heart for a Jewish person. It is clear, and this is a ruling in Torah, not only is it permitted but one is also obligated in this, as ruled by the Rambam in Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah chapter 1 halachah 6, and knowing this matter is a positive commandment. Similarly, this is also ruled in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim at the beginning of siman 98: one should not stand to pray (the Shemoneh Esrei prayer which is said three times daily and is obligatory from bar mitzvah age like all other mitzvos) except after contemplating G‑d's greatness before prayer. The point of contemplation is not just thinking about the words but about their meaning; and in order to contemplate G‑d's greatness one must reflect and delve into matters through which a person recognizes what G‑d's greatness truly is. These are explained in many books, including works of Chassidus. You should try to meet with Harav HaGaon Harav HaChassid etc. Haran Shemaryahu Sheshonkin — Rav of Romema Jerusalem — who will guide you to appropriate sources for these topics.
Regarding your question on how one can achieve humility and fulfill the Mishnah's teaching: "Be exceedingly humble in spirit." Study carefully the discourse in Tanya chapter 30 and also ask the aforementioned rabbi who will explain further and direct you to additional sources where you can find more explanation. This applies as well to other matters and questions mentioned in your letter.
You surely know about the three well-known daily study portions: Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya; at least keep up with them from now on.
With blessing,
In the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita
Secretary
