במענה למכתבו מעש"ק, מבקש ברכה להצלחה בלימודו וכו', ואף שיש לו רצון וכו', אבל אין לו חשק וכמו שלוקח ממנו וכו'.
והנה אי אפשר שיוקח ממנו החשק ח"ו כיון שזהו ציווי בורא עולם ומנהיגו בפועל שכאו"א מישראל יהי' לו חשק ורצון גמור לקיום כל האמור בתורתו הק', וענין תלמוד תורה הרי שקול כנגד כולם, אלא שדמיון הנ"ל הוא גם כן מתחבולות היצר הרע הממציא תחבולות שונות ומשונות בכדי להחליש את האדם בעבודתו לקונו, ואינו נמנע גם מענינים של שקר ותרמית, שזה עצמו צריך לעורר תוספת כח בהאדם להלחם נגדו, מלחמה ע"י ענין של היחס הדעת, שפירושו לא להכנס עמו בכלל בפלפולים ושקו"ט כי אם בפתגם קצר שאין זמן לפלפולים כיון שעבד הוא לממה"מ הקב"ה ועסוק במילוי ציווי אדונו הוא הקב"ה, ועיין ג"כ בתניא בכ"מ עצות היעוצות להנ"ל, וחקוקה תהי' בלבו הודעת חז"ל יגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין.

In response to your letter from Erev Shabbos Kodesh, in which you request a blessing for success in your studies, etc., and although you have the will, etc., you say you lack motivation and feel as if it has been taken from you, etc.
It is impossible for motivation to be taken from you, G‑d forbid, since this is the command of the Creator and Ruler of the world—that every single Jew must have complete motivation and desire to fulfill all that is stated in His holy Torah. The matter of Torah study is considered equal to all other mitzvos. This feeling that your motivation has been taken is also one of the tricks of the yetzer hara, who invents various schemes to weaken a person in his service of his Maker. He does not refrain even from lies and deception. This itself should arouse additional strength within a person to fight against him—a battle waged through focusing one's mind: not engaging with the yetzer hara in debate or discussion at all, but rather responding with a brief saying that there is no time for arguments since he is a servant of the King of kings, Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and busy fulfilling his Master's command. See also Tanya in several places for advice on this matter. Engraved in his heart should be our Sages' teaching: "If you labored and did not find [success], do not believe it."
