במענה למכתבו מיום החמישי, בו כותב הסברא שילמוד בתור תלמיד בבית המטבחים, אשר הנהלת ישיבת תומכי תמידים דמאנטרעאל בה לומד, הסכימו ליתן רשיון על הנ"ל.
אבל אינו מזכיר במכתבו נקודה עיקרית, והיא אם כבר רכש לו ידיעות די חשובות בתורתנו הק' שהרי ענינים של פרנסה איזה שתהי' יש לאדם המשכה להתעסק בזה עד שבעים שנה ואם בגבורות שמונים שנה, משא"כ בהנ"ל שבעוה"ר ומפני חשך הגלות מזמן לזמן מתמעט החשק, ובפרט משבאה הצעה דריחים על צווארו, וכהמהדרין בזה שבתור הכנה לריחים על צווארו צריך לבטל מלימוד התורה כמה וכמה שנים לפני זה, אף שזהו בהיפך הגמור מדין התורה (עיין הלכות תלמוד תורה לרבנו הזקן פרק ג' סוף סעיף א').
ולכן יציע כל הנ"ל לפני הנהלת ישיבת תומכי תמימים דמאנטרעאל, ובאם ימצאו שבידו ידיעות או כשרונות שמתאים לפניו ללמוד כמה שעות במשך השבוע במלאכת השו"ב ויקבל על עצמו לקבוע בשופי שיעורים כנ"ל הן בנגלה והן בחסידות, הנה אז אפשר להתענין להצעה האמורה.

In response to your letter from Thursday, in which you write the reasoning that you will study as a student at the slaughterhouse, for which the administration of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim of Montreal where you study agreed to grant permission for this. However, you do not mention in your letter a main point: whether you have already acquired sufficiently important knowledge in our holy Torah. After all, matters of livelihood—whatever they may be—occupy a person for up to seventy years and if with strength, eighty years; whereas in the above matter (Torah study), unfortunately due to the darkness of exile, enthusiasm diminishes from time to time, especially when a proposal comes to place 'the millstone around his neck.' Some are even more stringent and as preparation for 'the millstone around his neck,' they feel it necessary to interrupt Torah study for many years before this—even though this is completely contrary to Torah law (see Hilchos Talmud Torah by Rabbeinu HaZaken chapter 3 end of section 1).
Therefore, present all the above before the administration of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim Montreal. If they find that you possess knowledge or abilities suitable for you to dedicate several hours during the week to learning the craft of shochet u'bodek and you accept upon yourself to firmly establish regular times for learning both Nigleh and Chassidus as mentioned above—then it is possible to consider this proposal.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while practical training is important, one must first ensure solid grounding in Torah study. Any pursuit of livelihood should not come at the expense of consistent learning in both revealed and inner dimensions of Torah.
