Shalom u'Vrachah!

In reply to your letter of 20 Cheshvan and the one before it.

At an auspicious time I will mention you and your wife, may she live, at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, of saintly memory[1], for the fulfilment of your hearts' requests for good, in healthy and lasting children. And surely you are strengthening your trust in the Creator and Guide of the world: since this is the first mitzvah in our holy Torah[2] — a Torah of life — and a great mitzvah, and the Holy One, blessed be He, does not come with impossible demands upon His creatures[3], then if you stand bound and attached to the One Who commands the mitzvah[4], through a fitting way of life, and keep rising in this, as our Sages, of blessed memory, said, "one ascends in holiness"[5], you will be able to fulfil this mitzvah, and with joy.

With blessing for good news.

Notes

[1] My revered father-in-law, the Rebbe (כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר): the Previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn.

[2] The first mitzvah (מצוה הראשונה): "be fruitful and multiply" (Bereishis 1:28), the first of the Torah's mitzvos.

[3] Does not come with impossible demands (אין הקב"ה בא בטרוניא עם בריותיו): Avodah Zarah 3a — He does not demand of His creatures what they cannot do. Since He commanded this mitzvah, He has surely given them the power to fulfil it.

[4] Bound to the One Who commands the mitzvah (התקשרות ודביקות במצוה המצוה): as explained in Chassidus, mitzvah is related to tzavta, connection: keeping a mitzvah binds a person to Hashem, Who commands it.

[5] One ascends in holiness (מעלין בקדש): מעלין בקודש ואין מורידין, "one ascends in holiness and does not descend" (Berachos 28a).
