כשבקרני הרה"ג והרה"ח וו"ח אי"א נו"מ משכיל על דבר טוב איש אשכולות בעל מדות תרומיות עוסק בצ"צ וכו' הרב אלי' שי' המכונה דר. יאנג, הודיע לי כי בתכנית הדזוינט נכנסת תמיכה לבתי ספר למלאכה המתנהלים על ידי ישיבות באה"ק ת"ו ומהוים חלק מהן.
והוסיף, אשר דבר עמכם אודות ענין זה - היינו שישיבת לוד תפתח מחלקה ללמוד אומנות ומלאכה - וענו לו אשר ישאלו בזה את חוות דעתי.
ובמענה על שאלה זו:
נמנע הוא לשנות סדר ישיבות תומכי תמימים, באיזה מקום שיהיו, מהאופן והתכנית אשר התוו מיסדי' ומנהלי' הם כ"ק אדמו"ר (מהרש"ב) וכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר - זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע. ומכיון שכך, הרי אי אפשר לכלול בעצם הישיבה גופא שיעורים ללימוד אומנות ומלאכה. אבל לאידך גיסא, באשר ישנם כמה אברכים ובחורים, אשר אי אפשר, מפני כמה סיבות, להכניסם ולהמשיכם ללימוד בישיבה כל היום כולו, אבל ילמדו איזה שעות ביום נגלה וחסידות, בתנאי אשר ילמדום ג"כ אומנות ומלאכה, הנה נכון במאד להשתדל בהנ"ל שיהיו תחת השגחתם והשפעתם התמידית וזה הרי אפשר הוא על ידי יסוד מוסד מיוחד ללימוד תורת הנגלה והחסידות וגם כן אומנות ומלאכה, שיעמוד תחת חסותה של הישיבה, והשגחתה והנהלתה. ובטח אשר מוסד שכזה הי' מביא תועלת מרובה לכמה בחורים ואברכים. וכפי השיחה עם הרב יאנג שי', הנה שאלת ההוצאות שבזה - ישתדל בכל יכלתו, אשר תהא נפתרת על ידי הדזוינט. ובאשר להרב יאנג שי' השפעה גדולה בדזוינט, יש לקוות אשר הדזוינט ימלא בקשה זו במילואה.
אחכה למכתבם מפורט בכהנ"ל (איזו אומנות, תכנית, תקציב וכו') וההקדם בזה ישובח.
- ולכאורה טוב שהמוסד יהי' בהכפר אבל בהנהלתם.

To the administration of the Lod Yeshivah in Eretz HaKodesh, may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.

When I was visited by Haraha"g vavaha"ch vavac"h iy"a nu"m maskil al davar tov ish eshkolot ba'al middot terumiyot oseik b'tzt"z etc. Rabbi Eliyahu (called Dr. Young), he informed me that within the Joint Distribution Committee's program there is support for vocational schools operated by yeshivos in Eretz HaKodesh and which are part of them. He added that he spoke with you about this matter—that is, that the Lod Yeshivah should open a department for learning a trade and craft—and you replied that you would ask my opinion on this.
In response to this question: It is not permitted to change the order of Tomchei Temimim yeshivos, wherever they may be, from the manner and program established by their founders and directors—namely, the Rebbe Rashab and my father-in-law, the Rebbe—may their merit protect us. Therefore, it is impossible to include within the actual yeshivah itself classes for learning trades or crafts.
However, on the other hand, since there are several Avrechim and bochurim who—for various reasons—cannot be brought into or continue learning in yeshivah all day long but will learn some hours a day Nigleh and Chassidus on condition that they also learn a trade or craft—it is very proper to make every effort that these individuals remain under your constant supervision and influence. This can be accomplished by establishing a special institution for learning Torah (Nigleh and Chassidus) as well as a trade or craft, which would operate under the auspices of the yeshivah and its supervision and administration.
Certainly such an institution would bring great benefit to many bochurim and Avrechim. According to my conversation with Rabbi Young, he will do everything possible so that the expenses involved will be covered by the Joint Distribution Committee. Since Rabbi Young has significant influence with them, there is hope that they will fulfill this request in full.
I await your detailed letter regarding all of the above (which trade(s), program details, budget, etc.), and a prompt response will be appreciated. Seemingly it is best for this institution to be located in Kfar Chabad but under your administration.
