With pleasure and joy I received your letter from Monday of Parshas Lech Lecha, in which you inform me about the arrangements for the new term in your holy yeshiva and that your boundaries have expanded with more students. May Hashem grant you merit to further increase your boundaries with ever more worthy students, and to draw their hearts closer to their Father in Heaven by adding light through Ner Mitzvah (the candle of mitzvah) and Torah Or (the light of Torah), and the illumination within Torah—this is the Torah of Chassidus.

It is already well known the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal: When a lantern is placed in the street, people gather around it. We learn two things from this: (a) One cannot be satisfied with light inside one's own home; one must also place a lantern outside in the street. (b) The measure of good is greater: not only do those whom you actively engage gather around the lantern, but even just its presence—even if it stands outside on a dark night—draws people from the street. In fact, we see clearly that the darker it is outside, the stronger is the drawing power of the lantern's light.

Thank you very much for your comment regarding the students ... may they live; as per your suggestion I am writing to them (and enclosed is a copy of my letter). I hope for good results and thank you if you will also gladden me with news about this.

Enclosed is the kuntres for Yud-Tes Kislev approaching and a booklet; surely you will merit to benefit many with them in an appropriate manner, as well as my general letter connected to this kuntres.

It is very proper that you accepted into your yeshiva those bochurim from ... provided they are made into recipients, not otherwise.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that spreading Torah and Chassidus outward increases its impact—like a lantern shining even brighter when darkness grows. Yeshivas should expand their reach and inspire both internal students and those farther away by radiating G‑dly light beyond their walls.
