Shalom u'Vrachah!

With pleasure and joy I received your letter from Monday of Chayei Sarah. I had already been thinking about how I had not received any news from you for quite some time, though your son's letter—which included regards from you—somewhat reassured me. I am pleased that you have found a residence, and I hope that you and your wife will feel comfortable there and be able to use the time properly to strengthen your health—physical health in the literal sense—which for a Jew also brings about health of the soul. As the Mezritcher Maggid wrote to his son Reb Avraham HaMalach, who greatly valued fasts and self-mortification and was generally detached from the material world: his father, the Maggid, would often argue with him and try to influence him not to serve the Creator in that way. The father wrote to his son that "a small hole in the body makes a big hole in the soul." We see this with our own eyes: those who wish to serve the Creator without bodily disturbances such as weakness can perform their avodah with completeness.

Additionally, it is explained in many books that the body is not a person's property but belongs to the Creator; therefore, one must take care to maintain it in good condition (of course, not at the expense of harming the soul). Thus, according to Jewish law as well: one who injures himself—even though a human court does not punish him for this—is nevertheless liable according to Heavenly law. In the words of the Alter Rebbe: "A person has no permission over his body at all—to strike it or shame it or cause it any pain whatsoever—unless he does so as part of teshuvah, where such pain is for his benefit to save his soul from sin."

I hope that soon you will become acquainted with people there upon whom you can have an influence so that they too will become healthy in Florida—not only physically but also spiritually.

On this occasion I am enclosing herewith the first published booklet for Yud-Tes Kislev as well as the kuntres for Yud-Tes Kislev, where at the end are printed several letters from my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal.

I wish you together with your wife to make use of your stay in Florida in every detail in both material and spiritual enjoyment in the best possible way.

With blessing.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that caring for one's physical health is essential for spiritual growth. By maintaining balance between body and soul, one can serve G‑d more completely and positively influence others both materially and spiritually.
