מיט פארגעניגען האב איך באקומען דעם בריוו, געשריבען פון דער סעקרעטערין פון אייער גרופע, מרת חי' קרעמער תחי', אין וועלכען זי שרייבט, אז עס זיינען פארגעקומען וואלען פון אפיסערס און עס איז ערוויילט געווארען א פרעזידיום, און בעט א ברכה פאר הצלחה אין אייער ארבעט.
ווינש איך אייך אלעמען, מיט די אפיסערס בראש, אז איר זאלט אנגיין מיט אייער ארבעט בהצלחה, צו פארשפרייטען די ליכטיקייט פון תורה ומצוות בכלל, און פון חסידות ודרכי החסידים בפרט, ניט נאר בא זיך אין דער היים, נאר אויך ארום זיך, אזוי אז יעדערע פון אייך זאל דינען אלס ליכטיקע לאנטערנע (טארטש) וואס מאכט ליכטיק אויף א געוויסן שטח ארום זיך די פינסטערניש פון גלות.
עס איז באוואוסט דער ווארט פון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, וואס ער האט געענטפערט איינעם וואס האט זיך באקלאגט, אז ער איז איינער אליין אין א סביבה וועלכע איז ניט קיין רוחניות'דיקע ופשיטא ניט קיין חסידישע. האט דער רבי דער שווער אויף דערויף געענטפערט: ווען מען שטעלט אוועק א לאנטערנע אין גאס בא נאכט, קלייבט מען זיך ארום איר.
דערפון לערנען מיר צוויי זאכן: א) אז א איד בכלל, און א חסיד בפרט, סיי מאן סיי פרוי, טאר ניט באנוגנען זיך מיט האלטן א לאנטערנע בא זיך אין שטוב, נאר דארף זי ארויסטראגען אויך אין גאס. ב) ניט נאר ציט דאס צו מענטשן, וואס מען דארף זיך אנשטרענגען צו דערנעענטערן זיי, נאר עס וועלן אויך זיין באשטימטע קרייזען מענטשן, וועלכע וועלן זיך, פון זיך אליין, קלייבען זיך ארום דער לאנטערנע.
דער אויבערשטער זאל העלפען, אז דורך דעם תוספות אור וואס יעדערע פון אייך וועט מוסיף זיין אין גאס, וועט דער אויבערשטער מוסיף זיין ליכטיקייט כמה פעמים ככה, עס זאל ליכטיק זיין בא יעדען איינעם סיי בגשמיות און סיי ברוחניות.
בברכת הצלחה בעבודתן עבודת הכלל, וגם בעניניהן הפרטיים,
המחכה לבשורות טובות אשר נגשו כבר לעבודה בפועל וכבר רואות פרי טוב בעמלן.

Blessings and peace to the Young Women's Anash Fasting Society in Montreal, may Hashem be upon them for life!
It was with pleasure that I received the letter written by the secretary of your group, Mrs. Chaya Kremer, in which she writes that elections for officers have taken place and a presidium has been chosen, and she requests a blessing for success in your work.
I wish all of you, with the officers at your head, that you should proceed with your work successfully—to spread the light of Torah and mitzvos in general, and of Chassidus and chassidic ways in particular—not only within yourselves at home but also around you. Each of you should serve as a shining lantern (torch), illuminating a certain area around you with light against the darkness of exile.
It is well known what my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, said in response to someone who complained that he was alone in an environment that was neither spiritual nor chassidic. The Rebbe replied: When a lantern is placed on the street at night, people gather around it. From this we learn two things: (a) A Jew in general—and a chassid in particular—whether man or woman—should not be satisfied with holding a lantern inside their own home but must also bring it out into the street; (b) Not only does this attract people whom one must strive to draw closer, but there will also be certain circles of people who will gather around the lantern on their own.
May Hashem help that through this added light which each of you will bring into the street, Hashem will increase light many times over so that it will be bright for everyone both materially and spiritually.
With blessings for success in your communal work and also in your personal matters, awaiting good news—that you have already begun actual work and are already seeing good fruit from your efforts.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that every individual can illuminate their surroundings by spreading Torah and Chassidus outwardly. By being a source of light even beyond one's home, one inspires others—both those we reach out to directly and those drawn by our example.
