The 299th Mitzvah
1. The prohibition by which we were warned against causing one another to stumble through advice.
2. That is: if someone asks you for advice on a matter in which he is not expert, the warning came against misleading and deceiving him; rather, you must direct him to what you think is right.
3. This is His statement, may He be exalted: "ולפני עוור לא תתן מכשל" ("Do not place a stumbling block before the blind," Vayikra 19:14).
4. In the words of the Sifri: "ולפני סומא בדבר - היה נוטל ממך עצה אל תתן לו עצה שאינה הוגנת לו" ("'Before the blind'—one who is blind in a matter: if he was seeking advice from you, do not give him advice that is not good for him," Sifri).
5. It is further stated that this prohibition also includes one who assists in a transgression or brings it about,
6. since he comes to a person whose desire has blinded his sight so that he has become blind, and helps him in his straying, or prepares for him the means of his transgression.
7. Along these lines they said of the lender at interest and the borrower at interest that both transgress "ולפני עור לא תתן מכשל" ("Do not place a stumbling block before the blind"),
8. since each of them helps the other and enables him to complete the transgression.
9. And of many things of this kind they say, "עובר משום 'ולפני עור לא תתן מכשל'" ("he transgresses 'Do not place a stumbling block before the blind'").
10. But the plain meaning of the verse is what we mentioned first.
