Negative Mitzvah 253 - Not to wrong or harm a convert in business

The 253rd Mitzvah

1. The prohibition by which we were warned against wronging a righteous convert and harming him in his buying and selling.

2. This is His statement: "ולא תלחצנו" ("nor shall you oppress him," Shemos 22:20).

3. In the words of the Mechilta: "'ולא תלחצנו' - בממון" ("'Nor shall you oppress him'—in money").

4. It has already been explained in the Gemara, Bava Metzia, that one who wrongs a convert transgresses both "לא תונו איש את אחיו" ("You shall not wrong one another," Vayikra 25:14) and "וגר לא תונה" ("You shall not wrong a convert," Shemos 22:20).

5. Likewise one who oppresses him transgresses "[ו]לא תלחצנו" ("nor shall you oppress him," ibid.), in addition to the prohibition that includes him together with all of Israel — that is, wronging in money.
