Negative Mitzvah 251 - Not to oppress one another with words

The 251st Mitzvah

1. The prohibition by which we were warned against wronging one another with words.

2. That is, saying things to a person that pain him and insult him, from which he cannot recover himself. For example, if in his youth he had done things and then repented of them, and we say to him, "Thank Hashem, Who brought you over from such-and-such a path to this good path." And the like — hurtful speech about painful blemishes.

3. This is His statement, exalted be He: "ולא תונו איש את עמיתו ויראת מאלהיך" ("You shall not wrong one another, and you shall fear your G‑d," Vayikra 25:17). They said: "זו אונאת דברים" ("This is wronging with words").

4. In the words of the Sifra: "כשהוא אומר 'ולא תונו איש את עמיתו' - הרי אונאת דברים אמורה. אם היה בעל תשובה לא יאמר לו: זכור מעשיך הראשונים וגו', היו חלאים וכו' ראה חמרים וכו', לא יאמר לו בכמה חפץ זה וגו'" ("When it says, 'You shall not wrong one another,' it is speaking of wronging with words. How so? If a person is a baal teshuvah, one may not say to him, 'Remember your earlier deeds…'; if suffering came upon him…; if donkey-drivers came seeking grain…; one may not ask him, 'How much is this item?'…").

5. And they said: "גדולה אונאת דברים מאונאת ממון, שבאונאת דברים הוא אומר: 'ויראת מאלהיך'" ("Wronging with words is graver than wronging in money, for regarding wronging with words it says, 'and you shall fear your G‑d'").

6. The laws of this mitzvah have already been explained in the fourth chapter of Bava Metzia.
