המצווה הרכ"ח
האזהרה שהזהרנו מלמכור מגרשי הלויים והוא אמרו: "ושדה מגרש עריהם לא ימכר" (שם, לד). ואתה יודע לשון התורה שנותנים ללויים ערים ומגרש ושדה מגרש, כלומר: אלף אמה מגרש ואלפים אמה חוצה להם לשדות וכרמים, כמו שנתבאר במסכת סוטה, ובאה האזהרה ללויים מלשנות את הגבולות האלה לבל יעשו את העיר מגרש ולא המגרש עיר, ולא השדה מגרש ולא המגרש שדה, והוא אמרו: 'לא ימכר'. בא בקבלה שענינו:לא ישנה.וכבר נתבארו דיני מצווה זו בסוף ערכין.
The 228th Mitzvah
1. The prohibition in which we were warned not to sell the fields surrounding the cities of the Leviim, as it is stated: "And the field of the open land of their cities may not be sold" (Bamidbar 35:34). You are already aware of the language of the Torah, that the Leviim are given cities, open land, and the field of the open land—that is, one thousand amos of open land, and two thousand amos beyond that for fields and vineyards, as explained in Maseches Sotah. The prohibition came to warn the Leviim not to change these boundaries: not to make the city into open land, nor the open land into a city; not to make the field into open land, nor the open land into a field. This is the meaning of "may not be sold." It was received through tradition that its intent is: it may not be changed.
