Mitzvah 204 - To Return Lost Property to Its Owner

The 204th Mitzvah

1. The commandment in which we were commanded to return a lost object to its owner.

2. This is as He said: "השב תשיבנו לו" ("you shall surely return it to him," Shemos 23:4); "השב תשיבם לאחיך" ("you shall surely return them to your brother," Devarim 22:1).

3. And they said explicitly: "Returning a lost object is a positive commandment."

4. They also said about a lost object: "We thus learn that he transgresses a positive commandment and a prohibition."

5. We will explain the prohibition regarding a lost object in its place.

6. The laws of this mitzvah have already been explained in the second chapter of Bava Metzia.
