On Motzaei Yom Kippur in Liozna, the Alter Rebbe delivered a public Torah teaching—as was customary then, these were short derashos—on the verse, “Who is like Hashem our G‑d, whenever we call to Him” (elav). Elav—to Him, and not to His attributes. The Pardes says that elav refers to the lights that are vested in the vessels of the ten sefiros of Atzilus. The Baal Shem Tov says that elav means the G‑dliness that is within the vessels of the ten sefiros of Atzilus. The simple meaning is: elav—to His Essence, the Ein Sof, which every simple Jew knows with an innate knowledge through simple faith. And this is “close to Him,” and “whenever we call to Him”—to His Essence, the Ein Sof, and to the essence of the soul. Prayer with simple faith connects the essence of the soul with the Essence of the Ein Sof, so that the Essence of the Ein Sof will be the Healer of the sick and the Blesser of the years.
