Bar Mitzvah Maamar: The Connection Between Tefillin and Torah Study

בס"ד, יב תמוז, תרנ"ג.
This maamar explores the deep connection between the mitzvah of tefillin and Torah study, explaining how fulfilling tefillin is considered as if one studies Torah day and night. It delves into the spiritual significance of both mitzvos and their impact on the Jewish people.

בס"ד, יב תמוז, תרנ"ג.

B"H, 12 Tammuz, 5653.

It is stated in Midrash Tehillim: Rabbi Eliezer says, the Jewish people said before the Holy One Blessed be He: "Master of the Universe, we want to toil in Torah day and night, but we do not have time." Jews say to the Aibershter: "Master of the Universe, we want to be immersed in Torah day and night, but we do not have time." The Holy One Blessed be He said to them: "Fulfill the mitzvah of tefillin, and I will consider it for you as if you are toiling in Torah day and night." The Aibershter says to Jews: "If you fulfill the mitzvah of tefillin, I will count it for you as if you were immersed in Torah day and night."

At first glance this is not understood: what is it about the mitzvah of tefillin that substitutes for Torah study? What is the connection between these two matters—tefillin and Torah study—one to another?

The matter is as follows: It is written, "Maggid Devarav LeYaakov Chukav U'Mishpatav LeYisrael" (He tells His words to Yaakov, His statutes and judgments to Yisrael). The Midrash explains on this verse: There are some who command others to do something but do not do it themselves; but the Holy One Blessed be He—what He does Himself He tells Israel to do. As it says, "Maggid Devarav LeYaakov Chukav U'Mishpatav"—His words, statutes, and judgments that He Himself does, He tells Jews to do.

The meaning of "what He does Himself" is that it is Jews who cause that the Aibershter should perform mitzvos; through Jews performing mitzvos they cause that the Aibershter should perform those same mitzvos. Thus it turns out that when Jews put on tefillin they cause that the Holy One Blessed be He puts on tefillin.

Our Sages say: What is written in the tefillin of the Master of the world? "U'Mi KeAmcha KeYisrael Goy Echad BaAretz" (And who is like Your people Israel—a unique nation on earth). In Hashem's tefillin it states the greatness of Jews—that they are a unique nation on earth. So through Hashem putting on tefillin, Jews become greater.

To understand this more deeply: It is written "Hashkifah MiMe'on Kodshecha Min HaShamayim U'varech Es Amcha Yisrael" (Look down from Your holy abode from heaven and bless Your people Israel). Since it says "Ram Al Kol Goyim Hashem" (Hashem is exalted above all nations), meaning He is elevated above creation; from His essence it says "Im Chatasa Mah Tipol Bo... Im Tzadakta Mah Titen Lo... Uma Miyadcha Yikach" (If you sin what do you accomplish against Him... If you are righteous what do you give Him... What can He take from your hand). All upper and lower worlds are considered as nothing before Him. As it says "Ki Nisgav Shemo Levado" (His name alone is exalted), meaning His name alone—higher than creation; only His glory or a radiance from His name extends over earth and heaven.

This is what it means when it says "Kad Salik Hakadosh Baruch Hu Le'eila"—when the vitality from this radiance ascends higher toward His essence; then worlds have no standing at all. The conduct of worlds then becomes like sleep—as with a person who sleeps whose intellect withdraws from its vessel—the body—to its source; only imagination remains as an impression. Therefore it says "Vayikatz K'Yashen Hashem" (Hashem awoke as one sleeping) and also "Urah Lama Tishan Hashem" (Awaken! Why do You sleep Hashem?)—that there should be a revelation of infinite light within wisdom and kindness in His very essence; that there should be illumination of His innermost will—and this comes through drawing down Torah and mitzvos.

This is what is meant by "Habeyt MiShamayim U'Re'eh," or "Hashkifah MiMe'on Kodshecha Min HaShamayim," where shamayim (heaven) means sham mayim (there are waters), which refers to Torah likened to water [as it says "Ho Kol Tzamei L'chu LaMayim" (All who are thirsty go to water), which refers to Torah]. Then there will be blessing upon Israel—for through this level we become before Hashem something significant because true understanding and revelation come through Torah—and Torah among us is revealed.

This explains what the verse means: "Nift'chu HaShamayim VaEreh Maros Elokim" (The heavens opened up and I saw visions of G‑d)—this refers to aspaklaria hameirah (a clear lens), that through heaven/Torah one sees G‑dliness more clearly—as if looking through a magnifying glass where things appear larger and clearer than without it. Similarly, through gazing via Torah Jews who fulfill Torah appear before Hashem with praise and greatness.

This is also what is meant by "U'Mi KeAmcha Yisrael Goy Echad BaAretz," that they draw down unity into earth—that Hashem's unity should rest and be revealed even in this lowest world.

Chapter Two—Explaining the greatness of Torah can be understood from our Sages' statement: The Torah preceded creation by two thousand years. The meaning here isn't chronological precedence since time and space were both created entities—and before creation there was no concept of time—but rather precedence in quality; Torah stands above creation.

The root/source of worlds comes from middos (Divine attributes), as it says "Sheshet Yamim Asa" (Six days He made)—not 'in six days,' but 'six days' refers to six supernal attributes which descended into action. The beginning of ten utterances starts with Bereishis—which means bara shis ('He created six'), paralleling 'Olam Chesed Yibaneh' ('The world will be built with kindness'). There are two explanations here: one—that for worlds to come into being requires chesed/kindness which extends throughout all days; two—that one must build up kindness so that middos become a source for Beriah-Yetzirah-Asiyah.

But Torah preceded creation because 'Oraysa MeChochma Nafkas'—Torah emerges from wisdom/intellect which has no relation at all to worlds. Even when there’s no recipient for intellect/wisdom—it still exists independently; not so with middos/attributes which require someone upon whom kindness can be bestowed—as seen with Avraham sitting at his tent seeking guests so he could show kindness. Without recipients there’s no function for middos at all.

This helps us understand above where it says 'Zechor Rachamecha Vachasadecha Ki MeOlam Heimah'—that compassion/kindness relates only to worlds; without creation there's no need for chesed/kindness since there's no one upon whom to bestow kindness. This also explains why Etz Chaim begins with 'When arose in His simple will to benefit His creations,' reflecting an essential desire for goodness—but intellect itself did not extend into creation.

Even though our Sages say ten things were created with wisdom/understanding/knowledge—and Sefer Yetzirah speaks about three books/sefer/sofer/sipur—the main point remains that only mochin she'bamiddos (intellect within attributes) extends into creation—not essential intellect itself. But Oraysa MeChochma Nafkas—Torah emerges directly from wisdom—which precedes creation qualitatively ('Alpayim Shana Kadmah').

This also explains 'Aa'alefcha Chochma Aa'alefcha Binah'—the intellectual faculties precede worlds/middos; hence 'alpayim' refers not just numerically but qualitatively ('Aa'alefcha').

This returns us to Rabbi Eliezer's statement: Israel said before Hashem—we want to toil in Torah because through learning we draw down intellect into attributes—a great wondrous quality—but we lack time. Hashem replied: Fulfill tefillin—I will consider it as if you toil in Torah day/night.

The explanation: Through tefillin one draws down that Hashem puts on tefillin above—as explained earlier—which means drawing mochin/intellect into attributes themselves. Therefore a minor under thirteen isn't obligated in tefillin since he lacks mature intellect; only at bar mitzvah does he become an ish/man capable through donning tefillin of drawing down Divine intellect above.

Thus it's understood that supernal tefillin represent drawing essential intellect—and thus it's one aspect with learning Torah itself. Therefore Hashem said: Fulfill tefillin—I will consider it as if you toil in Torah day/night because through both comes Divine revelation below.

Summary

This maamar teaches how fulfilling tefillin connects us deeply with Divine intellect just like intensive Torah study does, revealing G‑dliness within ourselves and our world—even when time limits our learning opportunities.
