Shalom u'Vrachah!
We have been told: "Yagata u'Matzata" (If you have toiled and found [success]), and "Lo Yagata u'Matzata Al Ta'amin" (If you have not toiled and found [success], do not believe it). If something was not successful (literally), it is because one did not want to exert effort (even though he certainly can).
Therefore, the advice is that from now on, he should learn with effort, and then he will succeed. Especially, his study schedule should be as advised by his mentor.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true success in Torah study requires real effort. One should follow their mentor's guidance and commit to diligent learning in order to achieve meaningful results.
