Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter in which you write main points about your work as a military rabbi and ask for guidance on how to succeed in your mission: Based on the activities of Tzeirei Agudas Chabad, who have years of experience visiting army camps and meeting with students and the like, I suggest the following points:

A. Considering the short time available—as you write that only a few months remain at your post—and that most Jewish soldiers stay there only six weeks, it is difficult to plan a program that progresses step by step. Therefore, first and foremost, you should strive to awaken a general inspiration through words that come from the heart and enter the heart so that each person asks himself what his role is as a Jew and what he must do to fulfill it. The main thing is to arouse in him a desire to fulfill his role; if he has the will and recognizes his greatness and pride in being Jewish, he will naturally seek to expand his knowledge even after leaving your influence. Your impact will continue to resonate within him afterward.

B. To ensure this influence does not remain only in words but leads to concrete action—meaning an actual mitzvah every day—not only does each deed have its own value, but also one mitzvah leads to another. Moreover, practical action will constantly remind the recipient of those inspiring ideas that led him to act. For example: putting on tefillin every weekday (at least for a few moments), reciting Shema, giving a coin to tzedakah every weekday morning, etc.

C. Regarding those with families (doctors and others) who come for a year or more: naturally there should be an organized plan for set times of Torah study and observance of mitzvos such as kashrus, tefillin for men, family purity, etc., especially regarding children's education.

D. Attention should be paid that sometimes among the soldiers are young men from observant backgrounds who think they are exempt from mitzvos in the army due to difficulties. In fact, it is possible—even easier—to observe mitzvos in the army; moreover, they should recognize their responsibility and privilege to influence others. Who knows if this is not their main purpose in being assigned to this camp among new friends?

Since you write that only a few months remain at your post, surely you will increase your efforts so that when your successor arrives you can not only hand over an active work plan but also point out successes and fruits of your influence.

If further assistance or printed materials are needed, you may contact Tzeirei Agudas Chabad directly; perhaps they can arrange for one of their members to visit your camp if it would be especially beneficial.

Blessings for success and good news,
In the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
