מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבם מכ"ה ניסן, בו כותבים ע"ד ענינים וכו', וסברות בנוגע לזמן לימודים הבא.
והעיקר חסר לגמרי, כוונתי ע"ד התמדתם ושקידתם בלימוד התורה נגלה וחסידות, וגם מן הצד לא שמעתי עד"ז, ובפרט לאחרי מכתבי מאמצע החורף, שבודאי הגיע* גם אליהם, כיון שגם להם נתכוונתי, הרי נוסף על האמור שהוא העיקר - על כאו"א מתלמידי הישיבה הק' תורת אמת, להשתדל ולעשות כל התלוי בו, להרבות מספר התלמידים, וגם מפעולותיהם בזה לא נשמע מאומה, ובודאי במכתבם בדואר החוזר, יודיעו בפרטיות כנ"ל ע"ד ההתקדמות של כאו"א מהם בלימוד הנגלה ובלימוד החסידות (ופשיטא שאופן הלימוד הוא כהוראת חז"ל, מביא לידי מעשה, התקדמות בקיום המצות בהידור) וכן כמה תלמידים נצטרפו לכותלי הישיבה ע"י השתדלות כאו"א מהם,
והרי על כגון זה נאמר, יגעת ומצאת, יגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין, ז.א. שבאם לא מצאו, בודאי לא השתדלו בזה.

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 25th of Nissan, in which you write about various matters, etc., and your opinions regarding the timing of the upcoming studies. But the main point is completely missing—I mean your diligence and perseverance in studying Torah, both Nigleh and Chassidus. I have not heard anything about this even indirectly, especially after my letter from mid-winter—which surely also reached you since it was intended for you as well. In addition to what was said there (which is the main thing), every single student of the holy Yeshivas Toras Emes must strive and do everything possible to increase the number of students. Yet I have not heard anything about your activities in this area either. Surely in your next letter by return mail you will inform me in detail about each one's progress in learning Nigleh and Chassidus (and obviously that the manner of study is as our Sages instructed—leading to action, i.e., advancement in meticulous mitzvah observance), as well as how many students have joined the yeshivah through each one's efforts. Regarding this it is said: Yagata u'Matzata ("You toiled and found"); Yagata v'Lo Matzata Al Ta'amin ("If you toiled but did not find—do not believe it")—meaning that if you did not find results, clearly you did not truly try.
Blessings for good news in all the above matters as well as regarding each one of your friends.

P.S. It is understood that a "Kaloginker" will never lack excuses and justifications (if something above is lacking G‑d forbid) and will blame someone else while claiming he himself is right. Our Sages already informed us that anyone who listens to such excuses is pleasing to the Kaloginker. Based on this it is clear that you must be among those who are upright within Yeshivas Toras Emes, with your learning being true to yourselves as mentioned above—without paying attention to the enticements of the Kaloginker—and this suffices.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that real effort in Torah study and outreach yields tangible results; excuses are a sign of insufficient effort. One should focus on diligent learning and positive action without being swayed by rationalizations or distractions.
