Choosing a Yeshiva Based on the Student's Heartfelt Desire

The Rebbe writes that a student should learn specifically in the place his heart desires, as ruled in Shulchan Aruch, and urges parents to fully support their son's strong wish to study where he feels drawn. Forcing otherwise can harm his well-being and learning.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In continuation of what we discussed during your stay here regarding the place of study for Y.C.H. sheyichyeh, throughout the school year I refrained from writing to you or your son about this matter, for several reasons. Among them: it is obvious that I cannot write anything contrary to the ruling of Shulchan Aruch, which states that a son must learn specifically in the place his heart desires. Moreover, this instruction is placed not in the laws of Torah study but in the laws of honoring one's parents!

On the other hand, I did not want to intensify tensions at home, hoping that the matter would resolve itself, and justified my lack of response by noting that it was mid-year.

Now, as registration time for the coming school year approaches, I allow myself to express my strong hope that both you and your wife will permit your son to study where his heart has long desired and yearned to go. It is certainly best if all this is done with your full consent.

Additionally, I wish to point out—your son's desire in this matter is very strong and not at all temporary or passing (as you have surely observed over several months). That is, forcing him otherwise will affect him daily and result in consequences such as nervous tension, strained relationships, lack of diligence in studies, a hostile attitude toward the institution he is forced to attend, and more—phenomena which parents in general, especially those blessed by Hashem with G‑d-fearing, talented, and sensitive children, must do everything possible to prevent—and do so with joy—for Y.C.H.'s benefit both materially and spiritually.

Because of the urgency of this matter I am sending this letter quickly and urgently. Thank you in advance if you inform me soon of good news regarding all this.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that a child should be allowed to learn where his heart truly desires. Parental support for such choices ensures emotional well-being and spiritual growth; forcing otherwise can lead to negative consequences for both learning and family harmony.
